Guys,

Big Don here. I am just posting to let you know I think I've finally got the '00 to the point where I can stand to drive it. I installed a Power Edge comp box and a 14 cm turbine housing on it saturday. These go well with the DD II's and 4" exhaust. The truck really gets gone now, but would go better if the clutch would hold. I've read the posts, but am still ske[tical on clutches. I'd like to do this once so..... I am convinced I need a southbend, but not sure which model. I want it to be streetable as it is a daily driver and I tow with it occasionally. I need one that will hold 400-450 hp (heck you never know, I may decide to bomb the truck one of these days). I would appreciate any of you that could post your mods, approximate hp and what type of clutch you have and if it is holding and... . any key notes on the clutch i. e. do you like it or would you purchase again.

I like the Power Edge comp as it can be turned on/off and adjustability. On level 3-3 it outperforms my Edge EZ box. I thought I'd read where on 3-3 it was the same, but my EZ would not slip the clutch unless I was in fifth gear and smashed it.

thanks

Don

Hey Don, I don't know anything about the clutches, but I am glad you got the power you were after. That thing should run GOOD now!!!

Don M,

Do you have an estimate of the power you're making with that beast (man, I wish mine were a 12 valve)? Do you tow?? and how is your truck geared 3. 54 or 4. 10??? I know the 3. 54 gearing is a little tougher on the clutches than the 4. 10's. I have double clutch trouble. My 99 3500 only 24,000 miles and she lets go on every on ramp and my '00 just got upgraded and slipps like it's been greased when I hit it with the loud pedal!!!

thanks

Don

My last dyno run was only 404HP. Since then I have found some of my troubles and fixed 'em up.

Larger delivery valves helped the low end power some. My fuel shut-off solenoid was not lifting the lever up all the way and was about 20% short of full fuel delivery and I found out my timing was nearly stock when I checked it Sat afternoon.

Im going back to the dyno soon and will report back. I ragged on the truck real hard the last few days and clutch does not slip at all. Im guessing my HP to be closer to 430 now. Maybe more. Its hard to tell after 400 whatca got without a dyno.

I do tow a 8000 pound trailer and no slipage. I have sliped it one time, but I noticed I was not letting the clutch out and letting it engauge fully. Not the clutch this time it was the driver.

I have 4:10's

EZ Box

Hey Big Don,

Want to sell that EZ box? I have a friend who would be interested... . He has a 98. 5 24V. Let me know if you do and what you want fer it!

Well Don, i can give you the skinny on what i have, and have been through.

Peter... Close your eyes Man :D :D

I put in the 12. 5 SBC Con OFE about two months ago. it rocked.

the pedal felt great and the clutch would hold unless i stomp shifted it into third real hard. it still held but gave a little slip before it would catch. i use to race Mustangs with the T5, 5 speeds. when i say stomp shift, i mean a full throttle shift, in the blink of an eye. with just enough clutch pedal to let the gear loose. (2" depression)

Well. . i broke the center out of the disc.

the guys at South Bend didnt flinch. Peter sent me out his latest CON-FE and we changed me over to the 13" Disc and Pressure Plate.

the new one will hold more than i can give it at this time. . and the old one, would have held, if i didnt drive/race it the way i do. i towed with it a few times and at full throttle in fourth and fifth gears it held great. weight isnt the problem unless it is pounding on the clutch all the time. IMO

I cant say for sure but have heard my HP numbers are in here somewhere :D 450?? maybe

Call Peter and let him know your intesions and he can fix you up. he really is as great, as everyone says.

Well, I finally got my Comp on today (Thanks Fred!) I love it already . But, the downside is, my clutch can't hold level 4 or 5 :{.

The Comp paired with my BD2's... . well, my little HX35, and stock clutch are pretty much toast . First comes the black smoke out of the pipes, then the white smoke from the tires, then the gray smoke from the clutch . Comparing my last Dyno numbers, and SOP, I figure I'm between 360-370 hp.

My Pyro stays pegged and my clutch is now slipping, so I'm getting better :D.

Now for a Southbend and a B-1. I can see my bank account dwindling :{:{!

Guys,

Called Peter today and ordered two of his clutches. I got one of the 13" con-OFE's for my 99 cab and chassis and a 0090 Con-OFE for my '00. Should be here by the weekend.

thanks

Don

Big Don what is your boost and egt's with your setup with comp set on level 1? I have thinking of get the 14cm housing and was wondering if I would gane any boost.

Not exactly sure, but it appears to be @ 30-32 psi running empty. It just takes it a while to make boost on level one compared to level 3 or above. I am not real sure how much boost/power the truck will make as the clutch will simply not hold anyhting above level 2. Level 3 slips some in third gear and up. Level 4 slips anytime you get on it and I don't even use level 5 right now as it is pointless. I normally drive on level 3 as it gives good power and I can control clutch slippage fairly easy.

thanks

Don

What I have found

Don,

As you can read by my sig, I am set-up pretty close to you. From all of the research I have done. I would suggest the Con-OFE. This is what I am ordering today from Doug and Andy at ADT. This clutch will leave some room to BOMB and still have plenty of holding power. I believe the Con-O is a smoother clutch, but you are closure to it max HP rating right now. Check out Pier’s page. He has a special going on Southbend clutches.

Just my 2 cents,

Eric

err...I don't get it...

How exactly can you tell that your clutch is slipping? I have a 98. 5 3500 24V with an EZ and I don't think my clutch is slipping, even when I mash on it through the gears. How would I tell?

How you can tell ...

Get in about 4th gear, stomp the go pedal, and watch the tach and speedometer needles face each other. That's what mine does, anyway :D. And the grey smoke from the transmission is a sure sign.

Seriously, you can feel the clutch "let go" and the tach rises a lot more than normal. I don't think you can slip the clutch with just an EZ, but I've been wrong before.

Hmmm. . never seen my tach act erractly. Always seem to rise nice and smoothly. Wouldn't surprise me if my truck can't slip the clutch, before the EZ, I was considering LEMON law action... nothing that some DDIIs shouldn't take care of... :D
