Today I finally was able to get the MPG's I've been reading about in these discussion forms. Today as I always do,I filled up the tank and wrote the milage down. But instead of driving normally{stop/go,or combination city/highway},I headed out on I-85 at about 65 MPH. for a 3 hour trip. When I got back I filled the tank up again to mix some fuel additive in out at the truckstop. GUESS WHAT? 110 miles and it only took 5. 7 gallons!! That's the best milage I ever got{19. 2}. That's how I'm going to drive from now on. #ad

With the PE on just Level I 70mph to 90mph is a blast, when the roads are dry enough. Its fun toying with other cars... ... ...

I don't think I have ever gotten over 18mpg, but with my driving habits I am happy if I get 12mpg hehe.

I'm with KatDiesel on this one. At every tank fill up I say " okay, take it easy for a week, see if the mileage goes up". Then I end up puttin my foot in it and end up with the same MPG's as the last tank (12. 0 in town driving).

I have to agree with Scott and Eric, the best intentions somehow get twisted on the actual highway. #ad

I just made a little 700 mile trip from Tucson up to Flagstaff and back. We did a little running around up there for 3 days.
I averaged 17. 0 for the trip and our average speed was 70MPH. I kept telling myself if I could just drive 65-70 all the time, I would get great MPG numbers but out on I-10 or I-17 , 70MPH would be slow enough to be considered a traffic hazzard! Our speed limit is 75 and if you arent' doing 80+, you are constantly in someone's way.
I'm very happy with my 17. 0, mostly around 80MPH. There are some long 6-7% grades going up to Flagstaff and the little Cummins pulled them very nicely. It was funny watching the little cars and trucks trying to accelerate with me up the hills. #ad

My Truck

My new 2500 was really disappointing me. High average was 17 and the common average was down around 14-15. This is brand new out of the box. I usually run 75mph on the interstate to work and back. I decided to cut it back to 68-70 and see if that made a difference. Not really.

I think the big factors in my case are 1)a brand new truck (4800 miles to date) and 2) the hills here in Kentucky. Just made a round trip up to the flats of Ohio and was in the 17 mpg range. Just hope it gets better soon.

Personally I didn't buy the truck for MPG's. I got it to carry a load and have the power to pull it{and it does}. It just amazes me what people CLAIM to get on their milage. I think they look up at their Travel Convienence readout coasting downhill to pull these 20 to 28 MPG's I've been reading about.

Since the truck has been new, every gallon and mile has been logged in to the 10th. The 1st 8500 miles were driven with the camper and trailer on. With the camper in the bed{3600 lbs},and the trailer{1800 lbs} on it averages 12. Empty it gets right at 14. 5. Thats everyday driving to include:Mountains,Flatlands, headwind, tailwind, and all those other things we like to bend to our benifit. It was nice to take the trip yesterday,I'm getting around 19 now. #ad

With my 4:10 rear and running 2000 RPM 60 MPH between Phoenix and Tucson and back got 19 MPG. As anyone will tell you that has driven that road the limit it 75 and I was very very tempted to put on hazard lights to keep from getting run over. Was only flipped off a couple of times!!!! Bottom line driving style has a lot to do with good MPG and it really depends what you bought the truck for, towing, drag racing, etc? Oh I had about 8,000 miles on engine so expect to get better MPG when I get to 15 or 20,000 miles. I bought mine for old and slow towing going to retire with it pulling a 5er in a couple of years hopefulling if the stock market will ever get back to normal.

rrxp689, It took my truck nearly 10K before I started getting good mileage, hook up to a load and pull the puppy hard, you will brake in better and faster. I wish I would have know this. I am starting to loose a couple MPG with the colder weather, now-16mpg, in warmer ambient air temp-19mpg. Scott

I didn't know I-85 ran through Anchorage... I imagine your fuel is very winterized up there and you throw in the fact it takes longer for your truck to warm up, those things will detract from your mileage as well.

Just as some other people have done, been keeping a log from day one. Just did a round trip from Williamburg, VA to Youngstown, OH and managed about 21 mpg. Truck is a 98. 5 2500 Quad Cab short bed. Set the cruice at 67 mph which corresponds to about 2000 rpm. This is not too far up the curve for fuel consumption that I managed to get from Cummins. Have a 3. 54 ratio rear end and a 5 speed manual transmission. Truck so far is still stock but plan on installing some 'goodies' that purchased from Geno's garage. At the present time have 30,000 miles showing. Mileage around town was about 11 mpg which accouting for the cold and short trips is not too bad. The block heater sure got a work out though! The curves from Cummins sure have come in handy. There are three curves, torque, horsepower and specific fuel consumption. Looking at all three will give a good idea of what the engin is doing.

I think some folks who get good mileage use the "round off" method for calculations. Let me explain how that works. Drive 351 miles. Fill up the tank, and stop as soon as the handle clicks off. OK, 24. 9 gallons. There are two ways to calculate your mileage. The "old-fashioned" way is 351/24. 9 = 14. 1 mpg. Now, being modern bombers, we won't settle for such foolishness. We will round off the numbers to "facilitate" the calculation. 351 miles is almost 400. 24. 9 gallons is just over 20. Now, 400/20 = 20 mpg and that is a lot better #ad
As long as we do the calculation to one significant figure, it is also correct. #ad

Try some of the new "Fuzzy Math" that was used during the Prez campaign.

Using Fuzzy Math, I get over 50 mpgs but only claim 43 at 85 MPH... . and that's with 4. 10 gears!

Real numbers with 2000 miles on truck. 18 mpg in town, 14 mpg towing on two trips and 12 mpg on one trip with 20mph headwind. Have not done any solo highway since 600 miles on odometer and that was 21. 7. Computer always reads . 3 to . 5 less than calculated. I drive easy and tow at 60mph.

My 19 MPG was using milage gotten from odometer and gallons put in truck after the trip. Started with full tank also. Note truck unloaded except me and wife. No wind to speak of or any real grade changes that was of any consequence. I have seem MPG's of 13 up to over 19 depending on if highway, towing, etc. over 20 was doing 55 with RPM somehting around 1700 I think. No fuzzy math or rounding off either. #ad

I am happy with 16. 5 mixed driving and 17. 5 on the highway. All highway miles have been over mountain passes. Best ever has been 18. 5 . Not bad for 4:10 IMO.

I normally get around 14-17 mpg, farm truck. On a vacation 20-21, driving between 72. 5 and 80 mph. Very impressed. The milage computer is always off about 1 to 3 mpg.

I dont use FUZZY MATH. I cosistantly get between 18. 5-19. 5 mpg City/Hwy. The best I got was 28. 5 mpg straight highway going 57 mph. Filled the tank to the brim before and after the trip, on level ground. I Have gotten 27. 9 mpg going 65mph. These high numbers arent a fluke, others have gotten them. Just use your cruise control and relax. BTW. No trip computer in this truck. Just a calculator.

I made a return trip from western MO to LA (lower Alabama) on Monday and I got the best milage ever. I fueled at the Flying J on I-70 (said #2 on pump?) and refueled at the KY/Tn border. I wasn't empty but fuel was cheap; about $1. 30. My milage was 19. 25. I have over 40K since last May and I have checked every tank. The only diffrences that I could tell were low air temps)dense air) and a pint of Fuel Service. My truck is a stock 4 x 4, 5 speed with 3. 54s and 245 tires. The Fuel Service claims about 5% increase in milage which is about what I got. It would be marginally feasable to pay for year round treatment if it did work. let me know your thoughts.
