Finally wore out the crappy "D" rated nittos... nice tire, need more weight rating.

Heres the choices I like: (all "E" rated)

305/70/17 - Nitto Terra Grappler - Just like what I have but slightly wider - est $221

295/70/17 - TOYO Open Country M/T - same size I have now, but "E" rated - est $240

35x10. 5x17 - Super Swamper SSR radial - Awesome in the mud, and perfect size for me, tall and thin - est $250

Any thoughts are appreciated...

Have you considered the other Interco load range E's.

TrXus MT 35
Interco has a new AT out in a 35 E rating, but I forgot the name... Dave do you remember what their calling it?

well my limits are 35inch tall, no more than 11. 50 wide and obviously 17inch rim...

I want to stay away from the 35/12. 50 size if posible. .

BUT that 305 "E" rated BFG sounds interesting...

It's called the "Vortrac". You can read about it on their website. "E" rated, and a full 35" tall.

I would definitely stay away from Cooper Discoverer STT tires. They look really aggressive and tough, but they wear out fast and when half down they are really terrible in mud. We had them on our work truck and they lasted about 11 months and had chunks coming out of the middle down to the cord. Replaced them with BFG Mud-Terrains. They are definitely quieter and hopefully will last longer.

I have MT BAJA ATZ on mine, you can see the pics if you do a search for 'DRC is great'. They are E rated and I have them in a 305/55/20 size. Road noise is there but nothing out of this world and I pull a 16000lb trailer around and I cannot complain. I am very happy to say the least. They also stick pretty well on the water (the trailer is a boat trailer).

I had the 37x12. 5R16. 5 on my old CC Ford F350 Diesel and have on my Jeep the 35x10. 5R16's SS SSR's and I had about 35K on my truck when I sold it and they still had decent tread left, noise wasn't too bad and they wore pretty well since I rotated every 5-7K. But, the Toyo MT 295's are a nice tire and toyos seem to be a very good tire that holds the weight well. Let us know what you do. Scotty

I've been looking at the nittos. I'll have to check out the TOYO's and procomps. However i am looking for one that handles good on snow and ice.

truth be told I really want the SSR's because I hate getting stuck in the dirt parking lot (mud at that point) after loading my jeep on the trailer - It was bad enough I had to have a fellow tdr'er, KevinO, unhook his trailer and come pull be backwards out of trouble... I was PO'ed to say the least - Those nittos just dont have it, course they are an A/T though.

So the M/Ts are the front runners. . but SSR vs open country... tough call

PS - thanks for everyone that voting, that helps a ton, especially with most of you guys running the tires you voted for

285/70/17 nitto terra E's

Tomey, I got the 285 E's prior to last winter, LOVE THEM 100's over the 295 D's. The trucks stable again! :)

Snow performance is much better.

Traction is better since the tire flexes less and wheel hope is better (tho, new bilstien 5100's helped even more!)

Tire life is way up, by this this time last year with the 295 D's, the treds were gone and it was a safey issue if I didn't get them replaced by the first snow fall kinda "gone". Right now, I'm about 50% left.

Dry handling, VERY GOOD.

Thanks everyone for the input - Crazy enough I went a totally different way but with the info from this poll guiding me...

It seems 68% think the TOYO is a great tire. And all three tires are $200++.

Wellllllllllllllll, from another thread I found the OPEN COUNTRY A/T is available in the size "285/75/17". Right up my alley, 33. 8inches tall and only 11inches wide. 3980#'s at 80psi as well.

The best part is they are TOYO still and only about $170 a piece. Lets see... . $70 per tire less than the TOYO M/T's --- I think I just found the extra money for the T&C modded fuel rail I want!!

BTW - lets be serious, my truck is on the street most of the time and if I really get stuck while towing my jeep (1984 CJ with 40" boggers) - It just have to pull it off and pull the truck out with the jeep ;)

so there you have it... I will post when I get them...

Can't go wrong wit Toyo. Another good tire would have been Michelin.

Give us some pictures of the tires once you get them. I am either going with the Pro Comp Extreme AT 305/65R17 or the Toyo Open Country AT 285/75R17. I like them both, but hunting season is coming up and traction is nice to have in slick snow covered mud. Scotty

Tomeygun, you didn't consider the Procomp Xtreme A/T? Too late now, but if you want to see them on my truck let me know.

I just put the 285/75/17s on last week. If they last, they should be the perfect tire for me. ~34" tall, A/T and nearly 4000 lbs weight rating at 80 psi.

Cheapest I found them was on tires-easy.com. Even shipped, they beat everyone's cost price here in St. Louis.

Good luck to you and hope you like them.
