Here I am

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Finally stumped..... engine won't start (on its own), and stalls when put in gear.

Ok, no go on the valve adjustment.

I got the codes today. .

P0121

Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor Signal Volts Do Not Agree w/Idle Validation Signal

P0216

Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure

P1689

No Communication Between ECM & Injection Pump Module

Now at least I have a direction to go.

Later, Rob

P0121,

Is the APPS Sensor plugged in, Remove the three bolts that hold on the apps and check that the little square plug is puhsed the entire way in. You can recalabrate the APPS by removing the connecor, wait, and reconnect. When you turn the ignition on, with out starting, slowly push the accel. to the floor and slowly let off.

P0216

This is usually related to having the wrong pump key when installing a new pump. Since you have not installed a new pump, your timing controler is probably going nuts on the injector pump. Check that your Crank and Cam positioning sensor are functioning. The pump gets its inital time from the crank, but it also uses the cam along with a handful of items for timing. This could also be comming from a faulty APPS sensor.

P1689

I am very familiar with this one. This is a communication error between the injector pump and ecm on the datalink. This is connection 13 and 23 on the 50 pin connector block on the ecm and pins 1 and 2 on the Pecm on the injector pump. You can check for a short in the engine wire harness accross these two at the pump. Also, check that these connectors are tight and there is no corrosion on these ends.

Another thought, is the pump wire tapped. If the wire is tapped, corrosion might have begun on splice of the injector pump wire. Remember, the electronics of the pump work with resistance and a 5v. signal. Corosion changes the resistance of the wire.

Chanes are the pump is shot, but I hope not.

Hold on a sec... The VP44 gets its main sync signal from a sensor within itself. On the rotor of the pump, there is a tone ring, much like you would find inside a differential. On this ring there are teeth, with one spot where there is a missing tooth. This is how the VP44/ECM/FPCM finds out where the egine is. This sensor inside the VP44 is held in with two small screws, and they can work themselves loose over time, causing a no-start condition. To get to this small sensor, remove the top of the pump. You'll be able to see the sensor down in the pump, with a small ribbon cable going to it. Make sure the screws are snug and not loose.

I have seen the P0216 code set in virutally every dead VP44 I have seen. However, I have also seen plenty of toasted pumps that have NO codes set. For example, I have an '01 in the shop right now with a bad pump, but it was due to water in the fuel. No codes set on this one, but the pump is definitely dead. Probably has some siezed up plungers...

Hey Evan,

Are NEW VP's still available for purchase, or are we are left with is remans? :confused: :{ :{

I have heard a ton of differing answers to this simple question!

Well I say Sir, By Golly You are correct.

Maybe I can buy some Blinker fluid, or a fuel filter,, or some more stickers for my truck :)

Merrick Cummings Jr

BTW, I'm on my 3rd VP44 (2nd one was diagnosed as bad, but was OK, and is now a Back-up)

Yes there are new ones. They will cost more and are harder to find tho.

Any Cummins dealer can get both new and ReCon pumps for our trucks, usually within 1 day if they do not have them in stock. A ETC ReCom should cost around $1250 and a ETH should cost $1450

Yeah, new VP's are available, but quite hard to come by. Price is about the same, give or take a hundred bucks. We always install new VP pumps, as the reman ones tend to be of less quality.
