Dude that thing is awesome.

Could you give me any pointers, on making my a very basic 8 foot flatbed? I don't even really know where to begin. I'd just like a very plain flatbed. I was thinking about using treated wood for the deck, as opposed to diamond plate or regular steel plate. I'd like to do a rear skirt, and I'd like to be able to use 2" circles for side lamps and 6" ovals or 4" circles for the rear lighting.

It really shows that you put a lot of forethought into the design. You are truly talented; I wish I had 1/10th that talent. That's nicer than any aftermarket bed I've ever seen. It looks extremely functional. Great job!

Excellent work! Looks like you even put grease fittings on your compartment hinges.

Admire your planning that allowed you to pull your G/N without issues with your upper

equipment boxes. Slick!

With the help of a friend, I modified[more modestly] a flatbed for my '97 Chassis Cab.

We cut away the stock 4" C-channel and welded in 2" heavy tube, which allowed the bed to sit at a lower height. I see you also used the low profile mounting trick.

Keeping the bed low also allowed me to tow my G/N without removing my bed sides.

I can't say enough how impressed I am with your work!

HOLY flippin sweet flatbed!!!!!!!! that is just flat awesome!!!!!!! any thought on stuffing some inner fenderwells up in there? I woudlnt want alot of crap buildup on my sweet compressor parts :) Id say put some mud flaps on it they are cheap and worth it when it comes to paint chips. but hey congrats man youve done a awesome job!!!!!

That is the most original design I have ever seen. Your craftsmanship is impeccable! I would like to build a flat bed conversion for my 91. 5. GregH.

Flatbed

:D Nice job!I built one similar,it took a lot of work and time. If I buy another CTD the bed is going with me. I would post some pics if I could figure out how to do it. 6naline01

Wow, great work. I'm with the others in that I would love to have one of those. My 82 crew cab has a bed that last saw its best day on the day it left the assembly line. Since I plan on using my 82 as my gooseneck and 5th wheel puller, a bed like that would be perfect.

What thickness of steel did you use?

sorry, haven't been on here in a while, the sides and boxes are 1/8" mild steel, the floor is 3/16", fuel tank is 1/8", it is recessed 8" into the bed, the headache rack is also 1/8" and is made of 42 different pieces of flat plate, the main rails are 2x3 1/4" wall tube, the crossmembers are 1/8" 3 inch tall formed channels and the gooseneck hitch and mounting brackets are all made of 3/8" with it being doubled directly under the gooseneck ball... the truck's gotten a little scratched up at work lately, 22,000 miles in 6 months, it works hard and does its job very well, i wouldnt change a thing!... ... ... .

Wow, everything about that job looks right. It really fits the lines of the truck well, looks much nicer than a box.

as a side note, you mention you're demo contractor. I worked demo for about ten years, mostly NE U. S, but down into VA, NC, FL. I still have a bunch of friends in the industry, we probably know of some of the same people...

Your bed has gotten me thiking ever since I saw it. I have been noting and sketching out my ideas based on my needs. I think I will take on ding one myself when I finish up my shop. Any guidance or tips for a first time custom bed builder? Also, did the (I assume) constant measurements require that your original bed be off for the entirety of the build (my build may take longer than yours and I use the bed of my truck)?

Thanks in advance!

well, i had to have the bed off the truck the whole time, but if you had one of the new chassis cabs with the flat frame rails, it would be a whole lot easier :D , but if you want i could cut out some mounts for you to start with to speed up the build, i still have all the drawings saved on the computer, even though this is the only one i'll ever build probably, just let me know if you need help...

Definitely interested in the mounts. I'll shoot you a PM.
