To all who are using and have installed the Firestick CB antenna Fender mount , Should it be closest to the cab or in the next empty hole ? , or is it just preference ? and is it necessary to remove the paint to get a good ground ? Thanks !!!!
My bracket wasn't made by firestick but I assume it is similar. Hole location is your preferance. My bracket is stainless, no paint to remove. There is no need to remove paint on the fender because the bracket grounds through the coax.
What I did was use a stainless bolt and washers and mounted it in that empty hole that you are talking about. This lines up the antenna almost exactly with the radio antenna on the passenger fender.
I've seen all threee holes used. I had a problem mounting it to a body bolt and I wasn't sure I was going to get a good ground with the paint there. So I used the empty hole. And used stainless hardware. I get a good ground.
Overall I think it is preference and/or availability of the hardware. If I was putting the antenna on and didn't research it, I would have used the existing bolt. why??? because its there. . And I wouldn't have had the bolts.
On a side note if you use the empty hole and put a bolt through it, you'll notice on the hood there is a rubber bumper that keeps the hood from rattling. Drill a hole appx. the size of the bolt but don't drill all the way. That way when you install the hardware and antenna. When you close the hood I actually think it helps stabilize the hardware a little better. Take a look and you'll see what I mean.
Where did you get your mount? FireStik tells me their's won't work on the body bolt on an '03. They say you need to mount it further forward. How about some pics? Thanks.
I used the same stainless mount that I had on my 96. As far as I know it's the generic Dodge fender mount and I put it under the bolt that was already there in the fender. The fender on the 03's does slope ahead more so I put it in the vise and did a little tweeking so the antenna would still stand up straight.
If I could ever get my camera to take a small enough picture to post it here I would gladly do it for you. I'll try to get one and put it in my "readers rigs" album.

Ok, I got a couple pictures in my gallery located here.
I found that using the bolt closest to the door the antenna caused a whistling sound while driving. I moved it to the next bolt toward the front and no more wind noise. YMMV
