I just got a 97 from a junkyard and I have a 30 day warranty. I doubt I will have this thing in my Ford truck and running before the warranty expires. I was thinking about constructing a stand and firing it up just to check for knocks and to see what the oil pressure is. Without the torque converter to stiffen up the flexplate, will it damage the flexplate or starter to start it this way?

You better anchor that thing to the floor. Man, you're alot braver than I am. Try to roll the engine over with a breaker bar and with the valve pans off, check the sequence of the valves to make sure they're correctly opening and closing without binding first then procede cautiously.

You need sturdy stand, a battery, fuel supply can (you can return the fuel to the same source). You will need a coolant supply, don't run it long, it will overheat with no fan or shroud.

Be safe. .
