First 500 Miles....

I have 500 miles on my new 04. 5 2500 Quad Laramie Cummins. I have been frequently taking it up to redline or close to it on my shifts to break it in. I even drop down a gear on hills and run at 2500 rpm+ up to 3000 rpm varying the speed.



Does anybody take this engine into redline and how far. The rpm range for redline expands almost as much as the normal operating range. For the purposes of breaking in the engine, how much is too much?

I think the fuel delivery is limited to 3200 RPM. Probably does not hurt it to run it right up to 3200 and even keep it there if it is fully warmed up, even without being fully warmed it should be ok. I would not worry about the engine, the rear end is a different story, no towing for the first 500 miles so the gears break in right.

It's funny how much everyone worries about hurting these engines and breaking them in, I have a JD about the same displacement in a 100KW generator, it goes from sitting still for 6 days or less to full load in 8 seconds. It has 117 hours on it right now and it has been going through this type of cycle since it was new for the last 4 years. It would have more hours but the power is pretty good here.

Well, when my truck was in for the "Bad Freeze Plug Recall", the diesel tech ran the truck to the rev-limiter 3400RPM for five full minutes, and the truck only had 3300+ miles on it. I guess it's okay to shift there



Someone said that the truck comes apart at 4600, so 3400 seems pretty safe.

And I was worried about taking it up to 3000 w/ only 200 miles on the truck. I was climbing some steep hills yesterday and wanted to see what kind of power it had. I didn't beat on it though.

I haven't gone over 3200 redline but I frequently take it up to 2700-3000 between shift points. It gets fast after 3rd gear. It seems to me that the first three gears are setup to pull and get a load moving the next three are setup more for speed keeping that momementum moving.
