Here is the first word:
First Annual May Serenity
Question: Will there be a May Madness in 2020? There are a simple answer, and a complex answer. to this question. The simple answer is no. The complex and complete answer follows. The 25th Annual May Madness held in 2019 was, in fact, the final May Madness and we are retiring the name. However, this does not suggest there will be no more late-April/early-May gatherings. It merely means that, with due respect to the name and spirit of the earliest and original May Madnesses we have chosen to retire the name.
The 2020 event shall be the First Annual May Serenity. The madness of yesteryear is behind us.
The acronym “BOMB” (Better Off Modified, Baby) was generated to explain many owners’ modifications to make their Rams more suitable for heavy towing etc. At early Mad Madness events, 12-valve engines were what we had, and the new 215 HP engine was a source of mystery. The parking lots were scenes of torque plate and injector changes, turbine housing swaps, and timing adjustments. The 215 injection pump delivered more fuel than the 160, 175, and 180 HP pumps, and a new set of torque plates came about. With the 24-valve engine, the power curve was different and many were unhappy. Again, the parking lot saw changes in injectors, and soon programming enhancements. Madness, indeed!
This appellation is largely inapplicable today, because the factory now gives us stock ratings that were difficult and expensive to achieve in the past (even for the 215 HP engine with its “bigger” injection pump), and now we get better street drivability and reliability. The EPA is vigorously enforcing actions against the aftermarket and against independent shops. There seems little likelihood the truckers' adage “The more and the blacker a Diesel smokes, the better it is running” will ever return to the streets. Today almost all of us buy what we want directly from Ram, and experience serenity instead of madness to get what we want or need.
There are going to be a number of changes to our May event, which we hope will come as welcome news to new and past attendees.
The first of these is a return to the RV Park at Arizona Charlie's on Boulder Highway in Las Vegas. Long time attendees will recall that in 2001 and 2003 this was the host location. This change was at the request of a number of long-time attendees and volunteers and is, itself, subject to possible change after 2021. So, for 2020 and 2021 the event formerly known as May Madness will have the Arizona Charlie's RV Park as its base-location. The phone number for Arizona Charlie's RV Park is 702-951-5911. Mention Turbo Diesel Register at reservation time. Ask to speak to Justine in the rare case that you confuse the reservation agent.
Notably, there will no longer be the typical Saturday evening Banquet. In its stead will be an optional/off-the-menu/pay-as-you-go group dinner at Arizona Charlie's on Decatur Blvd in Las Vegas on 2nd of May. The Ram Round Up will occur in the parking lot at Arizona Charlie's Decatur prior to dinner. Timing of specific events will be determined.
We will no longer charge a registration fee to attend. However, attendees MUST send either an email to vegaswalter@gmail.com or a short letter to: May Serenity in care of: Walter A. Koziarz, 3121 Unicorn Ave, Pahrump, NV 89048 to RSVP so that we can plan for group-size, etc. Please indicate dates you will be in attendance, whether you will attend and participate in dyno-day, and indicate whether you will join us at Arizona Charlie's Decatur for the dinner Saturday evening. Reminder that the dinner will be order-off-the-menu and pay-as-you-go.
We will, for those expressing interest, have commemorative t-shirts; none will be automatically provided so that we may keep the event free of charge. Those that are interested in a t-shirt, please indicate size and quantity desired in your notification. Pricing will remain the same as in the past, $14 for M, L and XL; $15 for XXL, and $16 for XXXL. If you want one or more shirts, include the check made out to May Serenity with your response letter. The check will be cashed only if the level of interest is sufficient to make up an order with the shirt company.
So much for the changes, so what remains the same you may ask.
Dyno day will continue on Thursday afternoon as has been the norm for many years. The dyno day location (Diesel Specialists in North Las Vegas) is unchanged as is the deeply-discounted fee of $30.00 for a dyno run.
We will continue the tradition of the potluck dinner. The only direct cost to attend is the time to send an RSVP email or the time and postage to send a letter as requested above and the cost of an RV Park space and/or hotel stay.
We anticipate the attendance of knowledgeable persons but we do not plan formal presentations. We will make every effort to plan ample opportunity for deeper technical conversation but in a much more informal manner.
Please note that Saitta-Trudeau Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram has again offered to host a reception on the Tuesday evening of Serenity-week. This would be the evening of 28th of April. Those attendees seeking parts or service at Saitta-Trudeau may wish to plan to schedule appointments with the dealership around the 28th and 29th. Likewise, some that are planning to utilize this opportunity may wish to either spend the night of the 28th in the Preferred RV Park or in one of the local Pahrump hotels. The coordinator and volunteers of May Serenity cannot guarantee appointment or lodging availability.
The dates nominally selected are 27th April through 2nd May 2020.
The cost per day for spaces at the base-location RV Park (Arizona Charlie’s East) is $30.00. This is a very nice park, and the cost is reasonable in today’s situation (Preferred RV in Pahrump now costs $25).
There will be more information provided on the website or via email as the dates approach. Because the printed TDR magazine is quarterly we will not be able to provide the most up-to-date information through means other than the TDR Website or reply emails to those that RSVP via email. The coordinator and volunteers apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
