My first real toys for the truck showed up today, I got a set of Isspro EV gauges (tach, pyro, trans temp) and a second gen dash mount that they can call their new home ( Autometer 15002, minor trimming needed :D:D).

First impressions of the gauges are very good, having only used cheap gauges in my Jeeps, the Isspro EVs look very well made, nice clean crisp lines, and should be easy to see while dodging california traffic. :--) :--) :--)

For anyone still reading or newbies wondering who to start with... ... I choose PDR for my first bomb since I have heard good things on the forum, dealing with them was everything I had expected. Since I had no experience with any diesel performance shops they seemed like as good a place as any to start my slide down the ever steepening hill ahead of me.

Of course I am leaving town for the holiday, but I'll add pictures to my gallery when I get them installed in the next couple weeks.

Next stop, pump adjustments so I can gain back a couple HP I lost in the first days here for beating the truck up in the desert. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Sorry about the post length, guess I had a few things to say.

base line

It would Be neat to get a base line on your numbers before you start turning on it. Then post them and it will help old and new members alike.

I "hope" I have the discipline to put gauges in ,get a good base line then start adding stuff to my new one.

Any yes the stock trucks are stout..... but wait till you start "helping" it . WOW My new one is a ok but my buddy with w250 325K walked my new one's DOG And all we did was adjust the eccentric and preload on the spring.

I hope I can stand to keep the muffler and air box in long enough

for the gauges

yea haw roll the coal

Happy 4th of July

And so it starts... . ;)

Mine actually started with a BHAF, but went downhill (up?;)) after the gauges went in. :D I kept telling myself I wasn't gonna screw with the pump, but... . ;)

Oh yeah, I hear you, Flexiheep... Mine is a 2nd Gen, '01, stock 235 hp and 460 ft/lbs. , with 47RE and 3. 54 gears. And then I added a 4" exhaust and a aFe Magnum FORCE intake... and then after joining this bunch of power happy lunatics, (and enjoying every minute of it), I read and learned and weighed all the pros and cons on tuners, and finally took the plunge to add a Superchips. Now before I get a bunch of negatives about this, let me remind any and all who might have a negative opinion about the Superchips tuners- It's my truck, my money, and it works great and I love it, so if you don't like it or it didn't work well for you, just keep it to yourself, ok? Anyway, now I'll be adding gauges soon, and I know I'll keep my CDR more mild than wild, but that doesn't mean it's not gonna get tweaked here and there. Flexiheep, more power to ya! We're all in this together, and it's a big asylum!

Couldn't wait

Sorry RC, I haven't had the angel like patience of some, I did the pipe, and BHAF and turned the screws ever so slightly a couple months ago. Hope the Pastor doesn't see this (who took his stick anyway?), I don't want to loose too many RWHP... ...

Played with the tach a little last friday (hoping for plug-n-play), but couldn't get it to work, had a good ground, and good switched power, and there is some type of a signal from the computer (on AC volts I got a voltage rise with engine speed, darn pulse signals and cheap DMMs)... . Going to look into it more, can't wait to watch what the Cummins is doing.

Luckily My soon to be wife should help me from sliding down the slope to quickly, or at least the budget will...

:D :D :D

I'd hope the wife to be would be sliding down the slope in her own rig.

JApplegate- PDR is Piers Diesel Research. One of the premier R&D shops on the continent (they're in Canada) for CTD Rams. Owned and run by the pope of Power, Piers Harry. If I was still in Colo, I'd let you use my address. :D How's that coming, anyway?

Update

Well, there are pictures in my gallery now, not great ones, but it is a cheap camera, at least that is my excuse.

Sorry SamRams, I couldn't bring myself to drill a big hole in the dash, I have this thing about not making irreversable mods. I'll just live with the wires.

I didn't have to lengthen the Pyro or transmission temp gauge leads to the amp boxes, they were just barely long enough. I did have to lengthen the tach wire. I have to say save your 20 bucks and not get the "adapter harness". Since I had to use the signal wire without the filter and lengthen it, there really was no point in it, it was just 4 short wires with a couple 1/8 inch spade connectors... .

The empty hole in the side is for a switch I will wire into the dashlight feed, so I can turn them off at night if I want. I have to find my soldering iron first though..... The paint was from the dealer (in stock), it matchs everything but the dash which is a little darker than the "spice" interior (maybe its the light). I may change it some day when it bothers me.

Oh yah, I did a full bore (foot on floor) run unloaded up a 6% grade for a couple miles and couldn't get it over 1000 degrees. That was with a full turn on the fuel screw too. Maybe the auto is so loose that it reduces the load to control EGT. :D :D :D

Thanks for all the help guys.

The soon to be wife doesn't want a truck, but she is open to an oil burning MB,  but says I can't play with it :( :(

Looks good Flex! I hear what yer sayin' about the drilling - once you carve it, it stays carved! Nice install. How did you think the trimming was on the triple pod? Did you epoxy some bolts to the bottom or find a better way?

Oh yeah - have you thought about swapping the shift lever for the 2nd gen one with the o/d on/off switch at the tip? You'll never know how you did without it after making the swap. I have the 'directions' stashed somewhere in the thread archives. I can (I think) beam it to you if you want.

Looks good!:) What's with the pic near the shift lever?:D

I didn't have to lengthen any wires, either, but finding a good place for the boxes was kind of a pain... you would think in a big truck there would be all kinds of room under the dash, but noooo. :p

room under the dash?

Dan:

It is pretty amazing how little extra space there is under the dash really. I hate to think of what a new truck looks like with 5 times the wiring, and options. I wedged the boxes up between the side of the cab and the stuff above the Ebrake pedal.

The picture would be one of the many I have around, since the Fiancee is 1100 miles to the north for another month and a half. The funny thing is I saw it there in the picture, and didn't think a thing about it going on the web, or maybe I like to show her off when I can. :D :D :D

SamsRams:

I have your instructions on the desk, but I had been putting it off since my wonderful dealer said they have the part, it runs 140+ bucks. I decided till I found out what other people had done to get theirs I wasn't going to worry about it. I saw a post a while back that someone said it ran them 40 something at their dealer... ... . Anyone have a part number?

I actually built little right angle brackets that are velcroed to the dash that the pod then screws into. I might replace the velcro with straight double sided tape if it wiggles too much, time will tell. I figured that tape residue might be easier to remove than holes:p

The trimming wasn't too bad, didn't get it quiet right, but had removed too much to cut any deeper and lower it more. It is mounted back from the edge of the dash to lower it a bit more so I doesn't block shorter drivers vision. :-laf :-laf :-laf

O/D lever # is: 1-04690522AB. Cost should be around $45, at least is was about a year ago. Having finger-tip control of the o/d is sooo nice, like having a manual without having to row... .

WAIT ?

10-4 on the can't wait. I can't belive the difference in a stock truck and "warmed" up truck. I hope I can hold out for guages,

but its not looking to good. I miss my loud pipe and turbo sound but SOON ... ...

Great looking nerf bars ... ... .

I'm not sure i'm brave enought to use my new 4x4 off the paved rd but if i ever do i might "borrrow" your idea.

thanks

have a great day

Thanks for the number SamaRams, I'll give the dealer a call on that... ...

RC, I would probably do the bars out of 2*3 next time, as much for visual as strength. Not that your going to damage the heavy wall 2*2, I would also stick them out a little more since right now they are in betwen tightly tucked up, and being a good step. You can get a foot on them if you try, but it is not convinient to use.

I figure I can take my truck off road and scratch it up till I can't buff it out any more. When I start buffing to primer it might be time to stop. :D :D :D
