My brother recently bought a Duramax, GMC, Crew, 4x4, really beautiful, well equipped truck. I posted something about 2 months ago about driving it. We are talking heated leather, OnStar, all that stuff (well over 40K into it) We did the redneck thing and went to the ice races in Colorado Springs last night, so we were pretty fired up afterwards.

He was driving me back to where my truck was parked, telling me for the millionth time how fast is truck was, and how fast he went up Fillmore Hill (1/3rd mile, 8% grade or so, nice and steep and just long enough to really test your truck out). I said, well, since we are out here, and it is late enough where there won't be traffic, lets go. He gives me this incredulous look, says, "You need some Coffee? Wake up bro!

I answer him "Heck, I have nothing to loose, 168K on the odo, smokey 'ol dodge, let's go figure this out". 2700 on his odo.

So we hit the bottom of the hill, rolling slow start at 20mph, I let him nod his head and we go. I'm in 3rd, so I bog and blow smoke, he jumps his fender in front of me. I stab the clutch, get the turbo spooling, and either the clutch and/or tires give and the turbo hits the sweet spot. I get him by a full truck lenght. Catch 4th. Get him by another two truck lengths, Catch 5th at around 65 and get him by two more before I let up near the top doing close to 80mph (at the asphalt plant for those who know the hill). He is 5 lengths back, in this smokey black haze in his headlights. It was not even close.

We pull over and I said "What the hell was that?" He was shaking his head wondering what the hell happened to him. He seemed to feel the truck "layed down" on him. He is head mechanic on a hill climb racer (CHCA and pikes peak Lynn Cowen #9) so he knows how to drive, so that was not the problem. I'm wondering if his Allison went into protect mode, or he didn't have it in tow mode, or whatever else could have horked it.

Then again, I might of just beat his *** because his truck weighs 1000lbs more, is a 4x4, is stock, and I am running a 5spd, 2wd, standard cab, with a mild-tweaked PDR pump feeding lucas injectors and freed up airflow.

It rocked, especially after he got to talking about waking me up with coffee.

Big smile first gen's, they can do it

WAY TO GO NORBY!!!Oo. Oo.

I made the comment before that I felt my first gen could at least stay with a duramax for a ways and kind of got laughed at by a few people. I drove a duramax and was not impressed with the power. Was a real quiet and smooth riding truck though!:) At least I can hear mine run. :D :D

Very cool. :D

Now, I'd like to see you guys hook up a trailer, say, 12,000 lbs. or so to each truck and race up the same hill. I believe that is where the Cummins really shines - with a load. :D

I think you are right - hooking up some serious mass and doing a real truck test would have left him further aghast if that is possible. I need to get the rig timed just to be sure, and will dyno it then as well - I'm real curious what the heck is running under the hood now!

I'll post numbers when I get them, unfortunately time and money will prevent it from happening anytime soon.

Later folks, glad you enjoyed this one. Still looking for insight into how his truck did so poorly, or just the combination of a modified dodge vs a much heavier 4x4 gmc with an auto.
