First generation Cummins O'haul?

These first gennie trucks have been on the road long enough now to establish some mileage #'s, as well as what all is usually required in parts and $$$ to get one back on the road in good shape...



SO, how about it, anyone O'hauled their reasonably STOCK Cummins after high road miles? Details? Not talking busted engines here, just worn out ones... We like to brag about the "high mileage" the Cummins in these trucks is capable of - lets hear some real world evidence...

High mileage Cummins

Greetings Gary,

I just went by 491K miles on my Cummins and I know the engine has at least two wrecks under its belt, one (mine) was with a light rail train. Its running good, does not burn any oil and gets good fuel mileage. I've done a little checking around and prices quoted for rings and bearings and gasket set are running around 4 to 5 hundred. Won't know about things like cam or injection pump condition 'til I get into it but it still seems reasonable. One little thing though is that all the parts houses want to know the thickness of the head gasket. Something about that being one way Cummins regulates the compression ratio. Don't know if this gives you the info you were hoping for but I hope it's useful.

My "Early 91" Cummins had just over 700,000 HARD miles on it when I pulled it from the donor truck and did a complete over haul. I did a lot of calling around and found that the best place to get Cummins parts is Cummins. I replaced EVERYTHING but the head, block, crank shaft & rods. on the rebuild the WORST cyclindar wear was . 28. The cam/ Valves/ Seats/guides /seals where totaly worn out. I still haven't totaled the complete bill in fear that my wife would find out I also had my Cummins balanced while it was in the machine shop.

just had a bolt fall out of timming backing cover took the motor out. price all parts from cummins, rings , rods, mains, new cam, cam berings,gasket set,lifters,new inj. , havnt got price to do head work



cummins price 2500. 00 to start



heard about a place to buy a reman. block for 2000. 00 with warranty still check it out

i will let you know what i find out

Opps, yes I meant . 028 not . 28. My Cummins is Bored out to . 039, so I guess I am up to a 6 Liter Cummins
