Priceless racket

The shocked look on my wife's face was priceless, she had never heard such a racket from any of my other 'toys'.

As a 2nd-gen owner, I don't spend much time on the 1st-gen boards, but this is a heart-warming, typical of CTD owners, truck-love thread.

This quote reminds me of my own first experience hearing the Cummins with the wife. We flew from Las Vegas to Portland to pick up a brand new truck. It was a typical Oregon December day, and between the close quarters of concrete buildings at the small dealership, let's just say it was acoustically resonant. When the saleman fired up the cold motor, we both jumped! She hollered, IS THAT LOUD THING OURS? My heart was pounding and I was grinning so hard I couldn't even answer :D

I still heart throb and grin hard every time I fire up the mighty Cummins. Of course, same thing happens when I see my wife, but that's another love story.

I bought a Cummins and it came with a Dodge truck!

Peaceful Dodge...

When I was a toddler my grandpaw had a '49 Dodge. He would take me for a ride around the neighbor so I could take a nap. Every time I get into my rig I get the same peaceful feeling. This is a great place to learn and share for the mechanic minded man. I'd like to drive mine beyond 500K just to tell you'all. Patrick:D

I hope If one of you guys happens to see my truck after the next couple of weeks...

It just might make a grown man cry.

Still looking for the flatbed but starting next weekend The front fenders get trimed and a new custom front bumper/grill will be fabed up... . She will never be the same... .

Now if I can just find a place for the jet assisted take-off rockets I should be good to go. :D

When I spotted my 92 in the back lot of a dealership I knew it was for me. Even though it leaned a little, leaked a little oil, needed brakes. a new windshield and cranked a little slow, I just had to have her, plus it only had 63K miles on it.

It was going to the auction the following Monday so we dealed on the few repairs I wanted done and I took her home the following Wednesday. This has been the best truck I have ever owned. I cleaned her up and fixed remaining minor leaks, changed the oil and fuel filters, added gauges and have enjoyed many miles bouncing and smoking down the road.

I do enjoy seeing the look on some people faces when I start her up in a parking lot and see the cloud of smoke floating in the wind. Some people assume it has just caught on fire or something is wrong but we are just getting ready to hit the road.

I feel that if I take care of this truck it will give me many more miles, I in no way feel like buying a new truck at 40K and not knowing if it will start the next time because of some electronic gismo.

I think I've had the most fun with the 1st genny. In the current state of tune it is a joy to drive (being a 2 wheeler makes it a lot lighter then the dually) nice smooth power for all occasions. I love the way it just pops off when starting, all the starter has to do is engage the flexplate and it's running, even at 10' above (might not run great at that temp but a few cylinders hit at first). And there just isn't a better looking truck then this body style, nice boxy farm truck look.

Work at a Ford dealer these days and I just can't get used to the long crank time to get 'em running. Still find myself having to crank them over twice from time to time. The other guys in the shop give me crap for running my Dodges to work all the time, I just tell 'em them Ford paychecks make my Dodge payments just fine. One day I put a sign on my receiver hitch "Please remove before pulling Power Strokes". It went over well indeed.

Aw hec, I just like my truck. New ones are nice but have no character. (and they're ugly)

And I liked the word play,,, nuckin futs. ha ha

try this (if the Pastor allows it) on the next guy who bugs you about your "old" truck.

"miss on you pister, you ain't so muckin futs, go back off in yer own jack yard"

Sorry Bob, just delete it if you want

Parts of them will always continue to live on elsewhere:

Seriously though, I do miss my '92 w250 sometimes. I'd still be driving it doday if it woulda had a 5spd instead! I could go on more, but I won't right now.

must be nuts

OK this serious. I have heard all my life that if you tell a lie long enough it will become the truth. So here is what I propose. This will take some time and the help of TDR membership. I first got this idea while chating with a fellow TDR member.

Lets all start talking about the first gen going back into production. Don't bother with too much detail. Just say vaguely that "I think it was in the forum" that some really rich guy with connections in Mexico has bought all the dies for the body parts and is going to offer a renew build for anyone who own a first gen with a valid serial number. Completely new running gear and new interior with all leather. All the crappy stuff is up graded to eliminate the problems of the 89 to 93 issue. Only thing used from the old truck is the serial plate from the dash. Two door, four door, extended cab, whatever you want. Projected cost will be "around" nineteen thousand. Only way to get one is drive the old one to Alcapulco and stay there for the two weeks that it will take to get the renew completed. Embelish this with any detail that is important to you as individual owner. If anyone presses for detail just mumble something like "boy I love my Cummins".

Politicians and software writers do this all the time. It just might work.

Any thoughts on this?

Funny you brought that up. I read about that in "Truck Trend" a couple months ago. I'm booked in for the last part of August. Hope the AC holds out on the trip! ;)

Yea, gotta thing for my '89 W250 CTD. Bought it in 1991 with 87,000 on the odometer and now at 330,000+ I still think it's the greatest truck around.

I think about selling it and buying a 2nd gen but just can't do it. Even with all of the rattles and grinds. I still get a smile when I fire the old guy up.

So I guess I'm hooked and will be spending a lot less updating and prettying up the old fella up than the payment on a newer model and will have a truck not a lot of folks have.

I enjoy all the help and discussion here on the TDR.

I sure hope the fella in Mexico decides to rebuild first gens. I could use a vacation in a warmer climate.

I bought a brand new early '91, put nearly 120,000 miles on it in 11 years or so, mostly towing a 7000 lb. 5th wheel. I cranked up the pump a bit, had all the banks stuff, and added propane injection - I was NEVER passed in the hills by ANY other truck with a similar load - and in the time and miles I had mine, only part to fail was a $12 voltage regulator. I had a US Gear OD unit installed, the 3. 07 differential and the old 3-speed 727 auto transmission. ABSOLUTELY the BEST and most reliable vehicle I have EVER owned! The paint, interior, and all mechanical functions were as good when the new buyer drove off my place in '02 as the day I bought it - the paint, interior and all were very nearly like new, even tho' the truck sat outside 24/7! Shucks, it still had the original leak-free shocks on it, the front brakes had been replaced once, the rear drums had never been touched.

The guys in their new "quieter" 3rd generation trucksometimes tend to look down their noses at guys like me who have made the move to the 2nd generation trucks like my '02 - but *I* will NEVER knock or make fun of the first generation stuff - had FAR too much perfect service outta mine - and while I fully appreciate the newer features provided by my newer truck, it has some REAL big shoes to fill as far as the excellence and reliability of my '91 is concerned!

Check out the pointer above my sig below to see pics of my '91 in the Wax/polish test album - and be PROUD of your 1st generation trucks - they have NOTHING to be ashamed of!

"..... The guys in their new "quieter" 3rd generation trucksometimes tend to look down their noses at guys ... " not anymore, now they look at the tailgate as it pulls away... . ya baby, ya...
