An old friend used to use a Pepsi can to spit in, he was kind enough to leave one on a side table next to myself and an old girlfriend of mine at a party. Yep, you guessed it, she took a big ol' gulp of it, threw up all over me. She never called me again, Kinda glad she didn't, I still think of her puking on me when I see any body spitting in a soda/ beer can. I tend to stay clear of the stuff ever since. Something about a lap full of Regurgitated Beer nuts, Pina Colado's, Chex mix, and Chaw spit. I can't stand the sight or smell of any of these to this day.

I guess your wife should have known better than think you'd drop it. If it wasn't for this episode, I don't think I could have quit otherwise. It was horribly addicting for me.

Wasn't there a D model in there somewhere? And it seems that either the R or D was at one time the most fuel efficient tractor made.

The D tractors ran on gas or distillate. The 720 diesel held the fuel economy record for over 20yrs. My neighbor owns that specific tractor that set the record. He is a retired Deere engineer.

You have a sweet deal having 2 trucks. The house will come in time. You can't completely rebuild the place... like your doing in 6 months. Take your time... . keep the trucks... . Ask guys around the TDR... . you'd be supprised how many people can and will help... . can and will get CHEEP supplies... . etc!

There is always that option...

I can afford the house and all the bills associated with it. But, like I said - I'm not able to slap a few hundred bucks into the house itself every month like I wanted to. In time, I hopefully will be able to do that... it is a 30 year mortgage. :-laf

good ole jd 80. pony motor start. hand clutch. i grew up on that tractor plowing, disking cutting and raking hay. fuel efficient.



471 cubic inches on two cylinders!!!

The only problem with the 70, 80, 720, 820, 730, 830 is if you have to rebuild the pony motor you're looking at about $1,000 a cylinder .

My freind has a 720. He pull starts it, instead of rebuilding the pony, or putting elec. start on it.

I had an R and the only problem with it was that the starter was bad but when the pony motor did run it ran well and it didn't smoke to much it was a two cylinder opposed which if I remember correctly Cat helped them design it. Then they went to their own design with the V-4 on the 70,80,720,820,730,& 830

i also have a 1944 D2 caterpilliar. it also has a pony motor start. it is a two cylinder opposed engine. both the cat and the j d are very good on fuel. wish they would make them like that again!



on a side note, how many people do you know would be able to get an old pony-motor start machine up and running? kinda like the old guys running the steam engine at steam shows, they just keep getting older... .

You just said the magic word (steam) my grand father has a couple of them and I'm trying to get the one off of him my summer is pretty much booked do to steam shows I'm a life time member of the Rough & Tumble historical assosiation. Before the state of PA went and condemed the boiler I was taking it to a couple shows a year along with a couple of my freinds & their engines some times upwards of 12 engines to one show we would usually put two engines on a step deck trailer and go down the road.



All the old guys are dying off and there are very few younger guys to take their place :{

GBechtold, I'm jealous. It is great to hear about people keeping some of that old world iron up and running. The problem (for me) is that old steam equipment is like gold... . I can't believe what some of that stuff goes for. Makes it hard for us "young" guys to get a foothold. I have always had a great interest in steam equipment, and if it wasn't so expensive, I would have something. http://www.ytmag.com/index.htm has a lot of great info in case anyones interested.
