Just got back from a trip to the Keys. As on most of my trips to the Keys I brought along my 24' Scout Abaco boat. The boat and trailer weighs in at about 5700 lbs. While not a heavy weight it has a hard top and stands 10'4" high. My truck has the 3.42 gears in the rears and the Re68 (?) 6 speed auto. While I have always been a manual transmission guy I have to say the tow haul mode almost blows away any manual that I have owned. Coupled with the 800 Ft/lbs of turque and the engine break... Wow. I thought the gearing would hold the truck back, make it sluggish. I'm here to tell you that it does not. This truck out accelerates all of the older trucks that I have owned. The transmission seems to always know the right gear top be in reguardless of speed or hill. Not once did it hunt or down shift violently like other trucks that I have driven over the years. The engine break really works great. I found in the auto mode that if you just tapped the break enough to turn of the cruise and turn on the break lights the engine break and transmission would slow the truck just right on the I95 off ramps with out having to use the trucks service breaks.
My trip was a total of 3500 miles, most of which was towing. My Mpg's were not as good as the 2005 that I use to own. On the 05 I would get 13.5-14.5 at 64 mph. The 2013 gave 12.5-13. What I did find was that the Mpg's do not fall off as much when you run at 70. I was able to get 11.5-12.8 at 70mph. Best Mpg was at 60-65 Mph where I was able to get 13.5-13.8. At 45 I found that the Mpg's would reach 14.8. Def usage was around 1 gal to 450 miles when towing. I found out the hard way that the DEF tank is only about 6 gal. I thought the book said it was 8 gal? The fuel tank shows it's smaller size giving about a safe 285 miles of travel between fill ups. I'll be looking for a larger after market tank in the future as I miss the range of the 35 gal tank the 05 had. I should add here that when we got to the Keys we took a few trips with out the trailer or boat. If anyone has driven on Us1 down there you know you don't race anywhere. your average speed is about 40-50 Mph. Now this blew me away, at those speeds two full tanks worth, I got 27.8 Mpg!:--) I have never gotten that kind of Mpg's in any truck I have owned. All my Mpg calculations are done by hand not from the Lie o meter on the truck though it showed about 1 Mpg less than I was showing on paper.Oo.
My CEL lamp lit up half way through the trip.:mad: The same issue that I have written about on another thread on here with the P20EE code that has shown up about 4 times now. My Dealer is at a loss why it shows as it only shows up every 2,000 to 4,000 miles and there is nothing showing up just yet. Only issue this time was about 500 miles after it turned on I lost power#@$%!. Had to clear the code with my scan tool to get everything back to normal. The Dealer said that if the lamp flashes then it's a major issue, my lamp never flashed just turned on. I'll be heading back to my Dealer again later this week again..... maybe they will get lucky????:rolleyes: It's funny that I never had the CEL until after they Re- Flashed the truck with the program that was to eliminate the false CEL lights.... Progress...

All in all the hype about these trucks being much better than the older ones is.... well.... it's true. It pulls like no tomorrow. Delivers fair Mpg's and is quiet. all in all a pleasure to drive on long trips. RAM has gotten it right. Oo.

Good report... thanks for posting.

Questions:

Is your truck a 2500 or 3500?

Do you have a dually or single rear wheels?

Thanks,

John L.

Just completed a 5000 mile roundtrip WA to AZ and return pulling my Montana 2011 3150RL fifthwheel with my 2013 3500 Bighorn SRW long wheel base (385hp/850tq) Aisin with 3.42 gears. 10.9 mpg average for trip. I tow at 58-61mph , so with my larger Toyo 2.85 /75/18 ( 34.8"dia) tires, I'm in 5th gear all the time except when pulling mountain grades where I shift to 4th. I'm completely pleased with all aspects of this truck. Pulls great

EDankievitch,

I didn't think the 800 ft.lbs of torque model was available in the 2500 model for 2013. Maybe its just a California thing. When I bought my 2013 2500 SRW (with I believe is the 660 ft.lbs of torque) I couldn't get the high output motor. Any thoughts anyone??

I have just over 10,000 towing miles on my 3500 DRW 2013 RFE68 4:10s I love the new truck, have not seen any exceptional MPGs but a bit better than my modded 2004 towing the same load.

I think even Cali gets the 800/350-370 torque motor for 2013.... The 600 is for manuals.. Not even worth thinking about a manual anymore..

The Manuals get de-tuned to 660 Ft lbs the auto's are at or above 800 ft lbs. I was showing 1550 rpm at 70 mph in 6 th. I let the truck/ transmission pick the gear. Below 50 it would stay in 5 th to keep the rpm's close to 1500. I did give 5 th a try for one tank and actually got less mpg at 70 mph. About 1.25 mpg less. I was concerned about the ability of being able to get moving with the 3.42 rear gears. I'm here to tell you that is not an issue, this truck out accelerates the 05 and the 12 that I use to own. And where the 02 would wind out in each gear ( 02 was an auto transmission) then shift harsh this 13 just works nice. It never runs out of rpm or gears. Even with the throttle mashed by the time you hit the end of the on ramp your over 70 and have to back off. At least with my boat trailer load behind it. I do have to ask others with the 13-14 trucks what temp is your coolant running? I was showing 185-190 even under heavy load. transmission runs 165-170 and lube oil was 199-204. The coolant seems low to me. All my other trucks (05 and 12) would run 195-205.

My first long distance tow with my 2013 RAM 3500 DRW - pulled my empty gooseneck trailer (4,200 lbs.) 1,250 miles to Pennsylvania to pick up an 11,000 lb. Case 450B dozer. I was just over 24,000 lbs. headed back the same 1,250 miles through the hills of PA, MD, WV, VA, TN, & AR. I have 3.73 gears and ran in 5th gear with the dozer and averaged 9.5 mpg at 65 mph. The truck had 5,000 miles on it when I left. It was a great opportunity to 'break -in' the Cummins with a real load. The truck sucked down an entire tank of DEF on the trip but has not been quite as thirsty since that trip.

Ok Fellas, Let me get this straight....I am still wondering if my 2013 2500 SRW Auto has the 660 torque motor or the 800 toque motor?? I have nothing on the truck that says it is a High out put motor...I was under the impression that mine was the 660 torque motor....How do I know?? Is there any thing on the motor or paperwork or vin # that I can look up. Again my truck is a 2013 2500 SRW automatic RE MegaCab. I thought I read something that stated the HO motor was not available on the 2013 2500 SRW. Sorry to keep asking this question, but I guess this is the place to hopefully get the right answer. So, if I have the automatic I should have the 800 torque motor??? Now I’m not sure what motor I got in my truck. Sorry to keep asking, but it would be nice to know what I have....Thanks Steve

Steve;

Ram nor Cummins will state that you have an HO motor. All of the 2013.5 and up trucks with the SCR emission systems have the revised HP/TQ numbers based on the type of transmission ordered with the truck. As stated above the manual transmission have the 350/660 HP/TQ numbers and the two automatics have the higher HP/TQ numbers. As stated in the following information by R. Patton and I quote.

“Ram Heavy Duty Powertrain
Dominating the torque charts, the renowned 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel I-6 is available in three versions. The first version is paired with Ram’s segment exclusive six-speed manual transmission, which features a wear-compensating clutch for lifetime like-new performance and a dual-trunion shift tower to accommodate a compact shift pattern. This combination delivers 350 horsepower at 2,800 rpm and 660 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,400 rpm.

The second option matches the Cummins to the 68RFE six-speed automatic transmission. The diesel engine cranks out 370 horsepower at 2,800 rpm with an unsurpassed in 3/4-ton trucks 800 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm.

Finally, the 6.7-liter Cummins High-Output Turbo Diesel I-6 for Ram 3500 is paired with the Aisin six-speed automatic transmission (AS69RC), leaving no doubt to Ram Heavy Duty’s capability. In addition to 385 horsepower at 2,800 rpm, the most powerful Cummins generates best-in-class torque of 850 lb.-ft. at 1,700 rpm. The AS69RC transmission features wide gear ratios that contribute to impressive shift performance, efficiency and drivability.”

Jim, Thanks for the info... Does it matter when I bought the truck?? My truck was bought in April 2013 and I don't think it is a 2013.5 that you mentioned. If I hear you right, I should be producing 800 ft. lbs of torque if I have a 2013 2500 SRW with the 68RFE Trans??? Thanks

Steve

The 2013 2500 is reported to have 800 ft lbs trq and 370 HP....Thats what I have read anyway. I bought mine in April 2013 also.

It might be displayed on the engine EPA tag which engine you have. It's not going to show the trq but should show the engine hp. Also if you have the window sticker it will be on that.

Steve;
Any engine built after Jan 1 2013, is considered a 2013.5 engine with the new HP/TQ numbers.

Now when I was at the TDR rally held at the CEMP plant in Columbus IN last year. We were told that when an engine left the facility; it would be in a new Ram truck 5 days later. So I would think that you do have a 370/800 HP/TQ engine. You could contact Cummins Inc. with the engine serial number to find out for sure.

I think you are confusing when the Ram first came out with the 800 ft lbs torque engine in 2011 it was badged and labeled as an HO engine. The horse power was 350, now it's 370 and not the HO the 385/850 with Aisin trans has that badge..
