Got my first oil analysis back today from OAI. Oil is Amsoil 15W40HDD. Filters are Fleetgaurd Statapore full flow and Amsoil BE100 by pass. Oil had 4999K on it when the sample was taken and it was taken hot. Truck has 27 and change K on it and went to synthetics at 21K with 1k change at first to flush out the dino gunk. Got my numbers back and did a search on TDR to compare and still have questions.

Is there a place to find what the limits are for a given value? There is no comparison on the test report against what the oil should be. Here are my numbers:

iron-9

chromium-0

lead-1

copper-12

tin-0

aluminium-2

nickel-0

silver-0

silicon-5

boron-4

sodium-0

magnesium-21

calcium-3730

barium-0

phosphorus-1107

zinc-1322

molybedenum-0

titaium-0

potasium-0

fuel- less than 1%

Visc. @100C was 13. 42

water-0%

soot/solids-0. 1%

Glycol-negative

TBN-9. 91

oxidation-12. 0

f-soot (?)-. 01

No corrective action req. oil suitable for continued use.

So what do u think? Good/Bad/indifferent? Is there a source to compare against? I'm thinking about sampling again in another 5k or should I check sooner?

Only make up oil was for a full flow and by pass when I switched from the BMK15 to the BMK 11 single by pass. Maybe 3qts when that occured, but that was at 1k on the oil.

Thanks in advance.

I know very little, but I think that you've just established your "baseline". It'll become much more relevant when you do your next sample. IOW you should be looking for unexpected changes in the numbers.

The oil folks would have flagged anything way out of whack.

oil analysis

The numbers that you got are just for reference right now, you are trying to establish a "trend" for your engine. you are looking for the numbers on your next analysis to be slightly higher, but if the suddenly go up 2-3x what is trended then you know that you might have a problem with your engine in the future.

Blackstones universal averages are the right column. My averages are bold

iron-9 --- 44 22

chromium-0 --- 3 2

lead-1 --- 3 4

copper-12 --- 3 2

tin-0 --- 3 0

aluminium-2 --- 4 4

nickel-0 --- 0 0

silver-0 --- 0 0

silicon-5 --- 9 4

boron-4 --- 80 55

sodium-0 --- 3 2

magnesium-21 --- 480 487

calcium-3730 --- 2499 2762

barium-0 --- 0 0

phosphorus-1107 --- 1086 1217

zinc-1322 --- 1279 1355

molybedenum-0 --- 40 45

titaium-0 --- 0 0

potasium-0 --- 1 0

fuel- less than 1% --- < 2. 0% <0. 5

Visc. @100C was 13. 42 ------- they rate it a 210F

water-0% --- <0. 05% 0. 0

soot/solids-0. 1% --- <0. 8% <0. 5

Glycol-negative --- 0% 0. 0

f-soot (?)-. 01 --------

here is the definition:

Your analysis is interesting because your analysis (Amsoil) shows 0PPM of Molybdenum, mine averages 45PPM  and your Phosphorus is 1107 and my average (Delo 15W-40) is 1217, I thought Asmoil used more phorsphous than API allowed  Those are antiwear additives. Next, your Boron (Detergent/dispersant additive, antifreeze inhibitor) is 4 and my average is 55  Note the universal average is 80. Your iron content is extremely good at 9PPM, note the universal average of 44PPM. My iron content has been 16,24,27 with the average being 22, the increasing trend worries me but it is still below average

Don't worry if anything is out of wack they will flag it and let you know the corrective action to take. As wade said you half to establish a trend and then you will know when something changes. Those numbers look very good!

Thanks

Excellant thanks for the responses Guys.

Just curious, how long should I wait to sample again? Another 5K? I assume that if I only lost just over 2points on the TBN in the first 5K that I would not loose any more than that in the next 5K?

Thanks again
