First Oil Analysis

I just got the results of my first analysis since i bought my truck used. I changed everything right after I bought it and then changed again and sampled at 5200 miles on the oil. Total engine mileage 106500 (to the best of my knowledge ) You guys with experience give me any advice? Running Rotella T 15w40



Iron 24

Chromium 4

Lead 1

Copper 1

Tin 0

Aluminum 6

Nickel 0

Silver 0

Silicon 10

Fuel <1%

Vis 14. 09

Soot 0. 1%



Theres alot of other stuff sampled too, is there anything other than the above I should keep an eye on? Should I sample every change or how often? Sorry for the long post, I've never sampled oil before, even in the big CAT, just changed it often. Guess for $15 a shot its cheap insurance, maybe I should

The stuff you reported is all good. Was the nitration low? Was the oxidation low? Did they have any comments?

The viscosity is ok. Wear metals appear low too.



Good report of what you put up so far. Remembering it is trend analysis and you gotta do it a lot for it to make any sense.

The new formualtion of Rotella is already meeting the newest specification for PC-9. You will see the TBN higher in the Rotella now than the product just a few months back. Looks good.



For a reference point... there is a trend analysis in the 24 valve forum that shows the iron rates higher than yours. IMO, your doing the right thing by changing and using good oil.

That goes to show you once again that 3000 miles is really no time at all on todays Diesel oils.

If I was going to continue running Chevron, and wasn't BOMBed, I would run it 7500 miles.

What is the best way to collect the oil?

You won't believe it, I just got my first test today in the mail and came here to do a search and see what all these numbers mean.

I also use Rotella T, was tested at 5,000km with just a tiny bit over 403,000k.

I put your results first then mine... prety close eh!!!

You got almost double the kms I got.

btw: I know from the previous owner and myself that this truck has had nothing in it but Rotella T.

What's your Boron reading? Mines 491 and what is this stuff?

Boron is a additive used as a dispersant. Shell uses it in Rotella all the time.

Soot dispersancy is important in diesel engines and the new PC-9 spec is for the EGR equiped engines that will make a bit more spec.

So, its a good thing.

I'm using a Fumoto Drain Valve, the one with the nipple. Geno's carries these valves but not the version with the nipple. I like the one with the nipple [OK... no wise cracks] since I can put a cover over the nipple and keep things real clean for sample collecting. Using this valve I collect my samples with the engine running.



Just spoke with Geno's: They will start carrying the nipple version in a month or so, and may drop the nipple-less.
