 My 05 4x4 has 14k miles on it and I have done some heavy towing so I decided to change the NV5600 fluid to Amsoil MTF. I removered the cover for a complete drain and was surprised at how dirty the fluid was. I was real black and some ware deposits. I am not sure they clean the case real good before installation? I put 4. 25 quarts back in it. Thought about the cooler, but am going to run the Amsoil for about 10K and check the condition of the oil. I do check the temp with the laser temp reader and it has never been above 200.

I also looked for the grease fitting on the front drive shaft, mine has not been grease yet. It is really hard to find and hard to get to because of the skid plate.

I doubt that it get serviced when you take it into Dodge???? I will bet at about 50k alot of them will falling out of there. Very poor design, a design to have them back to the dealer for repair or new drive shafts. Sorry for the the bad spirit this morning, but I have got to go under and grease that joint.

Happy trucking, Dave Mc

Thanks for the info, how does the NV5600 like the Amsoil MTF?

This cold weather has got me thinking about changing my stock fluid to something that allows smoother shifts when the transmission is cold.

I switched to RedLine MTL prior to last winter. It has been really smooth with only minimal trouble in cold weather. It has to get into the teens here before I really notice it (like this morning). I am going to be switching to Amsoil MTL in the very near future as well.

that stock fluid is junk, and i mean junk---its one of the cheapest synthetics on the market! :--) good choice on the amsoil, it will deliver the best results. good luck :-laf

I'm running Pennzoil Synchromesh... it will be removed as soon as I get home... it was fine for about 2k miles... but now with around 7k, it is very "sticky".

I put a charge of Amsoil in mine, but it didn't help the cold shifting (and in Louisiana, I ain't talking very cold either). I still have to doubleclutch 2nd and 3rd sometimes until it rolls a couple miles.

the amsoil has to first overcome the old oil wear pattern before you will notice smother shifting, give it alittle more time it wiil be much better! :-laf

I can't believe you guys are having problems shifting. Mine shifts fine down to at least 10 below and it still has the original oil in it at 70 M miles.

I changed the oil in mine this evening. Went with the amsoil MTL. First thing I noticed is that the transmision doesn' rattle, vibrate or whatever it does nearly as bad when you are lugging between gears. You guys with DD clutchs will know what I'm talking about. While I was at it I also installed a filter kit. Kinda cheesy looking but I guess anything is better than nothing. The transmission doesn't seem to shift any better with the amsoil but it was definatly worth putting in because it made the transmission quieter.

The Amsoil MTF is a great fluid. I started using it the day it came out. 78K hard miles on my 03 and it still shifted great when I traded it in. I'm not one to tell someone what brand oil to use, but I will be sure to point out that many people are using the wrong viscosity of oil. The Redline MTL is a GL-4 75W-90 gear oil, perfect for the NV4500. However, the NV5600 requires a 5W-30 weight oil. Thats why Amsoil recomended using their 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel oil in the trans until the MTF was released. Oh, BTW, most over the road trucks use motor oil in the transmission!

I know of a guy with the NV5600 that has run Mobil 1, 5-30 for 300,000 miles with no problems. He also doesn't change fluids until 100,000 miles either.

Pennzoil makes the Mopar brand.

This is what confuses me about the Redline stuff. Their website says... "70W80 GL-4 Gear Oil (SAE 5W30/10W30 engine oil viscosity) is designed for use in manual transmissions and transaxles. " So what is it? 70w80 or 5w30/10w30?

I have tried stock, Pennzoil, Redline MTL and now Torco RTF (racing trans fluid). The Torco is far better imho, easier to get into gear, good shift quality. This same fluid worked very well for me in the NV4500 also.

Put in Amsoil Today

Just changed out my oil today with Amsoil. I changed it the first time at around 20k with factory stuff since amsoil at the time didn't have anything to my knowledge. Now with 39k figured it was time again. I hope this oil is as good as everyone says and it makes it a little smoother shifting.

I changed to Amsoil this weekend at about 25k miles. The jury is still out on the shifting. No noticeable difference, but I had no complaints with the stock fluid :)
