Very happy with the amsoil. Drove it today for the first time after changing it yesterday. There was a noticeable difference in how it shifted. Much smoother now.

Well, bought a case of Royal Purple synchromesh... seen some good reviews about it so took the plunge... got it for $47 to my door... cheaper shipped than buying Pennzoil locally. Anyone running the RP sychromesh in their 5600??

Also stocked up on Royal Purple 85w140 for the rears a month ago... two cases of 12 (24 total) for $100 to my door... they won't be needed for a while... anticipating the release of the detroit locker for the 11. 50AAM!!!

Figure I'll change it out next week... the Pennzoil stuff comes and goes... it is horrible when cold (but better than the factory junk) and gets better once you get 300 or 400 miles on it...

Someone refresh my memory, it takes less than 6 quarts to fill the NV5600... right??

i changed my n5600 fluid with 72k on it but the engine meter showed 3050hours so this transmission saw alot of shifting with an 28mph avg :--) my point is i changed the fuild and it was crystal clear like brand new oil?? is this normal i dont know if it had ever been changed. it must have however after pumping the new penz syncromesh in the oil once it started coming out of the fill hole it had a gray metallic haze to it mixed with the new oil. i think there is alot of grit that must have settled in the bottom of transmission how do i excavate all the old oil and clean the residue? i wont to change it again soon and put amsoil in there but need to get the metallic crud out first... how to? these transmission's need a filter on them :)

A transmission filter is availible at Geno's Garage... it is a bit pricey now for my blood (just jumped $15 since last catalog... $43 and shipping now). The 5600s have a magnet in the bottom of the transmission between the two PTO covers... I couldn't get mine out... next time it will either come out in one piece or several, but it's coming out. I figure as long as I keep fresh fluid in the transmission on regular intervals, I should be fine without a filter.

My fluid was crystal clear (well, a honey color) at 60k... I wiped the housing out the best I could since I had both PTO covers off at the time.

Just slide it out from the bottom of the case.

Hey Ryan, do you have to remove both PTO covers? or can you get it out by only removing the drivers side PTO cover.

Second what's the size of the little booger!!!, is it square, round, or??.

Thanks

when i did mine, i just pulled the drivers side cover... the magnet is square about 1. 5"x1. 5" - 3/32" thick or so and flexable [like the magnetic seal on your fridge door]

when i pulled my magnet out, i managed to push it way over to the other side fumbeling to get it out, and had to make a tool to retreve it without opening the other cover up [didn't really want to do that]

Trans. Filter

Awhile back, someone posted a picture of a used trans. filter, either here or on the DTR. I was surprised at how dirty the filter was. It seems to work.

I installed one on my NV-5600 at the last gear oil change. It's a string-wound filter & goes on pretty easily. Put mine on the passenger side of the trans. , which, is recommended because that is the direction the gears "sling" the gear oil. The filter, also, adds 8 oz. of fluid capacity. Got mine at Quad 4X4 (TDR Advertiser). It was a bit more expensive but, I got to talk with the owner who explained everything & they included an installation video, extra filter & gaskets. Installation is very easy, even without the video. Glad I did it!!!

I have had good results with Amsoil MTF. I also added Geno's fast coolers on both sides to increase fluid capacity. I think most will find that if they pull a cover when changing fluid that there is significant metal filings on the magnet. Probably normal wear but the OE fluid was sure black and thin when I changed at 40k. Shifts much better now but still have occasional hard-shifting going from neutral to 2nd.
