First Oil Change, No Problem

Guys:



Just had to post the first oil change on my wife's 03. I used the oil filter wrench that came with the Cummins ISB upper end tune up tool kit. Never worked on my '00 or '02 but it works great on the '03. I was loaded for bear after reading several times that folks were having to remove the oil filter using breaker and cheater bars. Mine wasn't loose, but wasn't overtight either. Installed the finger touch oil drain afterwards.



Gotta say I like changing the oil better on oour 03 than I do on the 02.

That was my experience also. I did mine a month or so ago and have recently had 2 friends over with 03s that changed theirs while here with the same ease. Did you get at the filter from above or below? We did all ours from the top with a regular old band type filter wrench. Now my 01 was a little different. If it was any tighter I would have had to chain the truck to a big tree to keep it from turning while trying to take that filter off. One of the guys that was over the other night said they must fired/promoted Bubba who was installing filters before.

i cahnged it from the bottom. With it being a 4X4 there is plenty of room.

LOL, I am sure I looked like a monkey ****ing a football changing my filter the 1st time.



I attacked it from the top, I regrouped and flanked it from the bottom, back to the top, and back to the bottom ... ... . I took the band type clamp WITH muti-position handle, crushed the filter jacket and then throwed it up on the hill in the weeds!!!!



I finally sat on top of the motor and drove the filter off with a long screw driver and a hammer ... ... ..... drove it straight into the lip til it got a bite and then angled my blows to screw the ****ard off.



Word of advice, oil the seal and tighten 1/4 a turn, lol.

Yep, I had about the same problem on my '00 oil filter... finally used my air powered chisel on it!



The '03 filter came off with my ancient el-cheapo band type filter wrench. I too worked from the top... didn't want hot oil running down my arm! I used the zip-lock bag method and dropped zipped up filter and bag straight down into the empty drain pan setting on the floor directly below the filter. I didn't spill a drop... easy game!



Yes, I think the "gorilla" at the factory has been replaced!

Something I've been doing if time permits is to drain the pan and then get after the filter after an hour or so, no leakage. If you don't have an hour or so to be truckless then this doesn't really work but its nice when it does.



Bill, how are your rates on trailer storage? I have one stored at my place that I get to use whenever I want to.

LOL, air chisel ... ... . God only knows what damage I would have caused with mine at that point, I was NOT happy #@$%!

Yep, we have a big 34' Avion setting out here on the hill... if the new owner only knew how much the towing and storage was really going to cost him

Stick him! He's getting the storage on his utility trailer for a song. Can't complain though, at least I have trailer I can use.

One little blast with the air chisel with the point on the outside rim at the top of the filter did the trick!! It took the shock of the hammering of the chisel to break it loose. Yes, if I had stayed on the trigger very long, I could have had a real mess!

I used an air hammer when I took the fan off of my old truck one time. One good pop and it would come off by hand. Amazing what little brute force can do for you.



I talked to Southbound today and told him about this. All he could say was thanks a lot Darren. I'm sure we could come up with all kinds of storage fees, transportation fees, county line crossing surcharges, not to mention various miscellaneous fees. It'll be there over a week, don't forgot to collect for the security detail. After all, the weenie dog has to eat.
