First oil change quality ?

Howdy all,

I know...not another oil change thread but....

Took the 2500 in for its first service at 5000 miles as I didn't want the original oil in for that long. Also had heard that Cummins virtually welds the original oil filter on and it's a bear to remove, so, why not let someone else pop the cherry.

Wife drove it to dealer and oil/filter service along with inspection of the usual "boilerplate" printout service. They even did the "Campaign recall-radio security update" Ooooooooooo now I don't have to worry about those pesky hackers changing the radio presets or steering my truck to the nearest swapmeet !!!!

Anyway, the MAIN question here is, the dealer put in 15W-40 oil. I specifically asked the wife to find out what was put in and she said "pennzoil". The invoice only said 15W-40 oil 12 quarts.

Now I have run DELO in all my diesel trucks and equipment for the last 15 years with absolutely no oil related issues.
Anyone know why the dealers use a Pennzoil product? Never seen it for sale anywhere I buy my DELO...only Rotella.

Opinions..theories???

Theory? Penzoil gives Ram a cheap price on synthetic for advertisement. I got my 4 free oil changes. I'm done with Penzoil

I don't think the pennzoil the dealer put in my truck is synthetic though. I think it's just regular conventional oil.

I know WAY back in the early 70's when I hung around a gas station in my youth, the mechanics did a informal study between Pennsoil 30wt and shell 30wt ( that was the common wt oil back in those days)

the pennsoil was always foamy looking and nasty in the oil fill tube vs the shell oil. Left a lasting impression in my mind. I used pennsoil a few times back then, but it seemed to burn right past the rings on my old jalopies. I haven't used it since...I know times and oil have changed , just saying..LOL


That was back when quart cans were cardboard on the side, the tin on top.It was no fun pouring oil back then..

Well, my dealer seems to think so. 15W-40 Pennzoil. That's all I know. I have never seen it where I buy my DELO oil (wally-smart).

Like Badunit, I'll use up my free oil changes and then over to DELO for the rest of the life of the unit.

Heh...I worked in a Texaco station back in the same time period. Sold LOT'S of Havoline oil, but my boss had a case of that Pennzoil in the back room for the customers that insisted on Pennzoil. The boss said that Pennzoil was crappy. I didn't believe him until I put Pennzoil Motorcycle oil in my Honda 750. After the first pennzoil change the inside of the oil cap was coated in white sludge...kinda looked like white grease. I switched to Castrol after that and never had the sludge again. Boss said "told you so"

Chrysler has used Shell/Pennzoil exclusively for the last five or so years. It is the only oil the corporation wants the dealers to use. They have to stand behind the engines so regardless of what opinion my dad had 40 years ago, it is a quality oil that exceeds the manufacturers specifications.

I thought it was Valvoline blue or something that Chrysler/Cummins was using. Or at least thats what everybody has been saying here.

I think what people have been saying is that Cummins uses Blue at the factory.

That is because the engine ships from Cummins to the assembly plant with the oil already in them. Otherwise they would have Shell/Pennzoil.

As John Martin has said in the TDR magazine, oils today are almost a commodity--just make sure they meet mfg. specs for viscosity range, C or S spec, and for our vehicles, the Mopar spec. For gassers, MS6395; for the Cummins, MS 10902 for Cummins spec CES20081.

Personally, I wouldn't put Pennzoil in a used KMART lawnmower. I used to use it but tore an engine down and it was covered with a HARD IMPOSSIBLE to remove build up.

Do you think FCA would have Shell/Pennzoil products on all the dealers shelves if it was not a good quality oil? They have to stand behind every engine, some for as long as 100k miles.

I called Cummins about 3 years ago and they said they ship all Cummins engines with Val full sysc oil. And if the dealer wasn't different, so be it. But per Cummins, if you use Val pre blue full sync oil you can extend the oil change by 5k.

I know of the Penns oil sold in the 60's and the 70's. Penn use to be a paraffin wax based oil. It was cheap and easy to find because they flood the market with it. When I owned my first car, I had to adjust the valves and when the cover came off, I knew where the paraffin went. It cooked out of the oil and the valves, guides and seats were almost hidden from view. Not the owner was a relative and gave me the car, but I do know he services the engine every 5k. Only problem was using Penns. Oil process are very different now days. Paraffin wax based oils are not process for modern motor oils. In fact, their new sync oil for the newer cars is made from natural gas.

While Pennzoil may be a fine oil I will continue to use Delo 400 in MY truck. The Customer should have a choice of any oil that meets the standards. I expect the warrantee will be honored with Delo 400. I am sure the financials were a part of th decision. Pennzoil most likely gave FCA a better price.

Please understand that when I tore that engine down and found HARD deposits on the cam and crank I gave up on Pennzoil. The engine was from a 73 Pinto 2000cc with 183k on it. Oil was changed every 3000. It still ran but was getting tired. Rebuilt it and sold it with 280k on it.

When they offer free oil changes, they have the right to select the oil and filter they want to provide, they are paying the bill. But it must meet the requirements for the vehicle. You have a choice of getting the free change, do it yourself, pay someone else or not do it at all. You are the owner. But if you want the warrantee coverage, you must meet their service requirements.

And if the customer wants to do their own changes, as long as the oil and filter meets the requirements for the vehicle, there is no issue.
BUT ... the customer must keep the receipt to prove they bought the approved products, and should document the date and mileage of when the change happened.

Decades ago, I had a Ford and did all my own servicing, with receipts stating dates of service. I asked the dealer service department if there was an issue, and the guy said they had no issue because it was done and met their requirements. They can't force you to have them do it, or to turn it in elsewhere for service if you can/want do it yourself.

I understand your opinion. That's why I turned down their free oil change offer. I am not an oil chemist but my experience left me with a strong negative opinion of Pennzoil. If the dealer will only supply Pennzoil I will do my own oil changes and us an approved oil. I choose Delo 400.
