We ran into the situation with the Liberty CRD. They recommended odd 0W-40. Approved but not recommended was 5w-40. I used rotella 5w-40. Turned out the 0w-40 was spec'ed to meet CAFE mileage standards. Now there are lot of CRDs out there with trashed rockers at 80-110K on the clock. Speculation is that the thin 0w-40 oil and heavy egr use (more than the euro counterpart (they don't seem to have this rocker issue in europe)) is what is killing the rockers. I defeated the emissions early on and ran good oil( I'm using old fashion 15-40 CI-4+ now). Oil analysis look real good. Point is, don't trust Chrysler on this. Do your own research. The motives for why Chrysler recommends this oil may not be the same as the end user trying to get the most out of the vehicle. And if emissions are deleted, all bets are off.

0W has superior cold weather cranking and pumping performance vs 5W (per the definition of the vis grade). At operating temperature there is no difference between a 0w40, a 5w40, and a 15w40. They are all 40w oils the only difference is cold weather pump ability. I run a 5w40 in my truck, but if I lived in a harsh climate such as northern Canada or Alaska I'd run a 0w40 for the excellent cold weather viscosity.
I also would not run a 15w40 in an engine that calls for 5w40, especially if you live in a cold climate. I just noticed you live in Georgia so it may not be as big an issue but cold weather starts with heavier than specd oil can accelerate wear.

I hear what you are saying and I don't disagree. It may just all be the egr crap. The recommended oil in non-North America vehicles for this engine is basically the same as our CTDs as far as temperature range recommendation. Even so, I tell the wife to plug up below freezing. I have about 2000 more miles before the first oil change running 15-40 in winter. UOA pending.

I did so much reading on this subject I thought my eyes were going to fall out. I decided to go with Rotella T6 on my last change and have about 1k miles on the oil. Yes, I know it does not meet the warranty requirements. I can say that I see two indications that the engine is working easier than before, the oil temperature seems to be lower and I am seeing a possible bump in mileage. Warmer days are ahead and I will be watching the oil temp to verify if it does indeed run cooler and as for the mileage I keep track of every fill up so I will know if it has increased. My driving habits hardly change and I won't be doing anything different than before, just see how it goes until the next change. Now, if this engine runs a cooler oil temperature and returns higher mileage than with the Pennzoil what does that say?

Shobbs,
With the change in oil temperature and mileage maybe the engine is getting more "broken in". I remember that my 6.7 took about 25k miles and the fuel mileage bumped up.
Just a thought....

I have thought about that, there was a small increase in mileage around 10k miles and the oil temp didn't change by any noticeable difference. Things have been pretty consistent since then without hardly any change. What I am seeing now is following the switch to Rotella and by all accounts are noticeable.

I bought a 2014 Eco-diesel early this year and went in two weeks ago for the first oil change (free thank God!). I aksed about the oil and was told to use Pennzoil Utra Platinum 0w-20. I'm not sure I believe the service advisor. The owners manual says 5w-30. In looking around for a reasonably-priced source, I ran across the Penzoil Euro which can be used for both gasoline and diesel engines. Believe it or not, the lowest cost source I could find is Wal-Mart online. Go figure. I didn't realize finding oil was going to be this difficult. I owned two Ram Cummins diesels prior to this truck and got pretty used to them, but this is a whole new ballgame.

Oil availability

I just did the first oil change on my 2014 ED. I bought it in January. I like to carry a bottle of oil in the truck just in case, but I was having problems finding oil that met thespecs and didn't cost my entire retirement check. I asked the service department at the local dealer what they were using, and they said Pennzoil Ultra 0w20. I asked them twice and got the same answer. Then I did a little snooping and found some boxes in the parts dept. of Pennzoil Ultra 0w40. What's the real skinny? Believe it or not, the best and one of the least expensive places I found to buy the Pennzoil Euro that meet the owner's manual specs is Wal-Mart online. Go figure. Last year folks were reporting problems finding oil, and there was confusion about what met manufacturer spec (see my earlier post). What's the latest info?

Just got an email notice today that Amsoil now has European Car Formula Synthetic motor oil (specifically for gasoline and diesel engines) that meets the Chrysler MS-11106 specification. Preferred member price of about $8.50 per quart.

Just had mine changed at the dealer, they wanted $158. Said they had a special where I could buy 4 oil and filter changes for $250. I thought heck of a deal, do it.

I'm sorry all, but after reading this thread and the hell you go through and cost of the new ED's, I'm staying with my old truck until she falls apart.
I guess I'm going to need to bring toilet paper with me if I ever have to buy a new truck again.

I found the filters for $10 with free shipping at Bonaza.com

Tom Masano Auto Group on Amazon also sell the oil (12 pack) for $108 with free shipping.

The first oil change on my EcoDiesel is fast approaching and I've had a heck of a time trying to find the specified oil. The dealer I checked has the Pennzoil Ultra Euro L synthetic 5W-30, the only problem is they sell it for $17.54/liter. The truck requires 10 liters so that's CDN $175.40 just for the oil! I've seen this oil on Amazon for less than half of that price, but they don't ship to Canada. I heard the dealers here sell the Mopar oil filter for around $100, luckily I ordered mine through Geno's for USD $50.

Another oil I've seen on the shelves here that is rated for this truck is Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 selling for $16.79/liter at Canadian Tire stores. It meets the Chrysler MS-11106 specification. I should have bought this oil when I last saw it as today there was nothing on the shelf and nothing on order at my local store.

Another German brand I found today at NAPA was made by LIQUI MOLY and it sold for over $100 for 5 liters! NAPA brings it in for VW customers. I have to check some more on this one to see if it meets the ACEA C3 rating but again it's a little too pricey.

Has anyone come up with any other compatible oils for the ED at a reasonable price with good availability? I know part of the problem is my rural location and there's not that many of these trucks or euro cars that would require this type of oil around here.

On the plus side the owners manual says the oil change interval is 16,000 km or 12 months or as indicated. I'm actually racking up the miles on this truck quickly so I'll hit the mileage change interval well before the time limitation. It's interesting when compared to my CTD with a 24,000 km or 6 month or as indicated oil change interval. Completely different engines but I wonder if this super special oil for the ED has something to do with the 12 month interval as compared to 6 months for the CTD? Unfortunately due to lack of use I'll be changing the CTD oil based on time and not mileage.

On the plus side while looking for oil today I did buy a pail of Mobil Delvac Super 1300 15W-40 for the CTD which worked out to $3.50/liter!

If anyone has found alternative oils for the ED please post. Thanks.

AMSOIL has a European oil that meets the specs, and is available in Canada. Here is a price list for it.
