WELL EVERYBODY I FINALLY GOT MY ETH/DEE 8/25 AFTER A 15 WEEK WAIT. MY QUESTION IS, I'LL BE DOING MY FIRST OIL CHANGE MYSELF. FIRST, SHOULD I USE A STANDARD OIL LIKE ROTELLA FOR BREAK IN , APROX. WHAT IS THE MILAGE FOR BREAK IN ??,THAN I'LL CHANGE TO AMSOIL AFTERWARDS, SEEMS MOST PEOPLE USE IT . MY FILTER IS GOING TO BE FLEETGUARD STRAPORE LF 3894. I'M LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE,JUST WANT TO TAKE THE BEST OF CARE OF WHAT WE HAVE. I BELIEVE THE DECISION TO GET MARRIED WAS EASIER THAN THE DECISIONS I HAVE TO MAKE ON MY SECOND HONEY. ANY FEED BACK WOULD BE APPRECIATED THANKS

On the oil do not switch to synthetic until about 15,000 miles or so. The engine isn't fully broken in until then in most cases.

CAM,
Tips collected from recent posts on oil changes:
1) Get some oil filter pliars; Genos has them from the links page, I'm sure others do too.
2) Putting a large ziplock around the oil filter allows removal without spilling over everything. It's a little tricky, but I got mine off without spilling a drop outside of the bag.
3) I've seen numbers ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 and even more recommended for the "pre-synthethic" break in. I changed to Delvac 1 synthetic at 11,124, and will be going over to Amsoil (the 5W-30 HDD) at my next change, which is still a few thousand away. The 15,000 suggested earlier is probably an excellent compromise, unless you are towing, in which case I'd probably go closer to 10,000.
4) You are also supposed to empty the breather bottle at every oil change. I didn't do this until 11,124, and my bottle was nowhere near overflowing, but, different engines may breathe differently so I can't promise you it is OK to wait. I think the only consequences of ignoring this step entirely would be oil dripping on your driveway if the bottle ever fills up.
5) Almost forgot the big one - some people have shorted out their fuses by touching the hot lead on the alternator with the oil filter wrench handle. Mine is covered and difficult to short out like this, but, be careful and if your wrench handle isn't insulated (plastic coated) consider placing some type of barrier there to prevent electrical contact.
GOOD LUCK, and I hope your wife is as amused with your new Love Affair as mine is.

Cam,it's a good idea to get into adjusting your rear brakes at every oil change. Our self adjusters haven't proven to be self adjusting. It's an easy 5 minute job that will save you some headaches down the road. There are many archive posts on how to do it.

Sorry, just couldn't resist being a smart-a@# and pointing out the obvious!

OK, What breather bottle are you talking about? I am going to start changing my oil my self. I'm tried of taking all the goodies off when i go to the dealer. Hope this is not a dumn question.

<font color=blue> No its not a "dumb" question. To locate it open your hood, look straight down at the front of the engine. You'll see a "tube" coming out and bent "downward" and it goes into a bottle. Get under the truck and look up in that same area and you will see "the bottle" its held by one screw on a strap (I think) I haven't removed mine yet as I have only done one oil change, my 2nd oil change is coming this weekend probably and I will remove and clean it at that time.

Hope this explains it enough. Also I don't know which year they started "adding" the bottle 99 model? I wanna say for the year 2000 trucks. The older trucks just have a tube... no bottle to catch it #ad

Kat Diesel.

Thanks for the help. The dealer left his oil filter tool in my truck the other day. It had a strap that look like a seat belt on one end and a 1" tube handle at the other. I took it back because i thought it had something to do with the lift. When I took it back he said that it was used to take the filter off. D#@#@# the luck i should have keeped it. Where can i buy one just like.

Thanks
