Did the first oil change today. Best way to change the filter is from under the truck. They put that first filter on extremely tight; had to strap wrench it for a full turn (360 degrees) before it was loose enough to turn by hand.

Dang was the oil clean! Still clear! Changed at 2388 miles. I don't like putting many miles on the first oil since it's 'break-in' oil that washes out any crud in the engine at build time. JMO.

Was real easy to do. The new drain plug is neat. About half again as tall as the previous generations; and the oil didn't start running out until the plug was just a 1/4 turn from fully out -- kind of handy if you tend to drain the oil before it's cooled down.

Used Premium Blue 15w-40 Synthetic blend from Cummins (not a full synthetic) and Fleetguard Stratopore LF16035 oil filter. Cummins Great Plains ordered me the filters a couple weeks ago.

Mark,

Thanks for the update. I find the oil interesting as well. My old truck only took a trip around the block to turn it black. I can still see the dipstick through mine at almost 1000 miles. Cheers.

Big MAK,

Good move, changing the break in oil early. I just hit 1,000 and plan on changing it as soon as I get my hands on a filter.

I changed my oil at 1200 miles and it to was still nice and golden. I was very surprised because we have two powerstroke rescues at the fire department I work for and those have black oil five miles after an oil change. Do you think it's a difference in oil quality or a difference in the engines. I used rotella and a fleetguard stratapore.
