Did my first oil change today, 4000 miles on the 600, here are the ups and downs.



Spent alot of time trying to hunt down Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40, ended up finding it by a napa 1 mile from my house. Ordered my filter and filter wrench from Genos garage, showed up fast. Filter came off real easy with the wrench from Geno's, but next is where the problems hit. First oil change on a diesel not used to the 3 gallons of oil. I used my 15 Qt oil captureing device. It did not drain into the pan fast enough and overflowed all over my driveway, 3 gallons is alot more than the 4. 5 quart of my past truck. The rest went well... Anyone know of what works to clean up diesel oil stains on the driveway?

Clean up!

Straight Simple Green (available at that Napa, or Home Depot etc) will clean teh oil right up. It is bio degradeable too. You should clean up waht you can with saw dust etc, let it soak up over night, and spray straight simple green on the spot. . should com up pretty well. If you weren't seriously asking. . maybe this post will help someone who cares. .
 
The Oil spot is huge spilled at least one quart or more. Wife gets home tomorrow afternoon so i have till then to get it cleaned up, or i'll be sleeping in the truck. I've allready tried shampoo, car wash, bleach with water, and some other stuff.



Off to the store for some simple green!

A lot of service stations use Tide powder detergent on oil spills and sweep it around on the stain and put a little water on it and scrub it with a broom and rinse off.
 
i normally sprinkle on some Dawn dish washing liquid, rub it in with a scrub brush and then let it sit for mother nature to take care of.



if you need to remove it right away, let it sit for at least 5 minutes before you hose it off.



when you get done, re-apply the dawn and leave it. rain will get it out eventually.

Do the kitty litter and use a piece of 2x4 wood block to grind it into the oil spot. We used to use that with good results in auto class years ago. We nailed a block on the front and back wide enough for your shoe to fit, so your foot won't slip off it.
 
Mine did not overflow my 15 quart capturing device, however here is my advice:

Get one of those 2x3 metal pans to put under it-if you only spilled a quart it would have been able to handle that-especially with you panicking with the Bounty towels sopping it up.



I saw this on the diesel stop-have not tried it, and my PSD buddy was skeptical. Drill a hole in the oil filter and drain it before removing it-might not be as messy. They also said use a shop vac on the oil filler to hold the oil in the engine after pulling the oil plug out, until you are good and ready for it to drain.



I got one of those tubes from Genos to drain the oil-I installed the oil plug part this time-I'll post with the results on that after my next change. For a 900lb motor it sure is a flimsy sounding oil pan.



I'm going to try all the above advice on the Type F stains on my driveway from my previous truck!
 
I ended-up buying a new catch that has bigger opening. Now overflowing isn't a problem. However, with my old one, I learned to hold the (oil pan) drain plug. When the level gets too high in the catch, push the drain plug back in to slow/stop the flow for a minute. It's not as messy as it sounds, and certainly cleaner than overflowing.
