Three weeks ago I purchased my first cummins powered vehicle, a 1997 2500 4x4 automatic with 220000 miles on it. The truck was an old man one owner all stock rig when I bought it, I added a BHAF, straight pipe, and 100hp fuel plate from ebay. The truck pulls very strong now but I am worried the transmission is going to grenade very soon with so many miles and now the power adders. Who builds a transmission that will hold say 400hp/800tq?? I will be adding 3k spring kit, 370 injectors, and a complete 4" exhaust soon and want to have a transmission picked out... ...

There is also my personal favorite... Suncoast.

They have been tried and proven.

If they can stand up to the likes of Darren Morrison, David Dunbar, and Jeff Garmon, etc... I'd trust it.

search for ats, dtt, goerend, suncoast. all good options and weeks of reading on here. I just got through talking to all of them while shopping around for my truck.

Wow... I'm in the same boat as I have no aftermarket transmission. Look at each of the websites. . Something that might be more helpfull is to deside what mods will give you the power you want from your engine, come up with a ballpark figure on how much power you plan to have, and plan accordingly by asking what people have found necessary to get X amount of power to the ground. This way, you aren't getting into the situation of "blah blah blah is the ONLY way to go. "

Once you know roughly what you will need, go back and look again at what the companies provide that will apply to you, and go from there. Consider whether you will be building or buying your transmission, the downtime involved (shipping, the swap and shipping a core back if need be) Whether you have an installer near you. . Things of that nature.

The Big companies i've personally looked at (not in depth) are:

DTT

ATS

Suncoast

Goerend

Also, Many people on the site suggest that you call them... Get a Vibe about who it is you're dealing with. Some are there to make the sale and some are there to make a customer.

Hope this helps some.

Welcome!!!!!

You can't go wrong with any of the big four but DTT gets my vote. If your near Michigan LSFarm is the man to see.

Joe

My personal favorite:

SunCoast Converters

They built mine before my eyes (TC/VB/transmission/OD/Input Shaft/Flex Plate/ Mounts/Lines&Fittings) and dared me to break it. I've been trying for 2 years - no luck. :D :-laf

These seem to be the four primary choices. As someone else mentioned, if you aren't going to do your own install then you really need to check out the shop that will do the install for you and determine their experience with the transmission you select.

Also, I've been told that it can be pretty difficult to get the shift points right on 2nd gen trucks after installing an aftermarket transmission.

All that said I'm happy with my DTT and would install one again.

In my search for the right transmission company I read a bunch of posts, talked to the companies and just confused the heck out of myself. There are many days of reading on here, good and bad about all of the BIG dealers. What has made my decision for me is e-mailing each to find out who has a tech. or repair shop the closest. I found a guy in my home town who is an authorized distributor, installer, and tech for ATS. So in considering the shipping, core charges, istallation, any adjustments and/or repairs that might need to be made, my mind is made up. There is something to be said for looking the guy in the eye, before and after the install. Hope this may help narrow down your search. Good luck, Robert.
