Less vibration in a 4BT

1954 Fargo Town Panel w/ CUMMINS on ebay.

Got 24 mpg on I10 going to Tucson and 32 mpg back home towards Phoenix using back roads. Put over 500 miles on the Scout last weekend and with out any problems. The Torque is wonderful, pulled all hills in 5th on the freeway and only shifted down on grades of 10% and over. And this is the old style engine with the VE pump, a used engine with who knows how many miles on it, stock, only 105 HP! I guess the original engine was more worn out than I had thought. All I can say is let all your repowers be Cummins.

Steve

I don't have any definitive data just seat-of-the-pants, but the performance of the 4BT over my old worn out SD33T is the differance between night and day. The rated HP is only 4 HP differance but the torque must be twice that of the Nissan. The Cummins makes the Scout into a hot-rod tractor!

Steve

What is your top end speed for the 4bt? Does it sound as noisey as the sd33t? I plan to replace mine with a 4bta and getrag on my traveler. I hope i'm as lucky as you on engine condition. . was your nv4500/bell housing a bolt up affair or did you have to redrill and resize the transmission input bearing housing? I can't wait to have a reliable and smoke free set up... thanks for sharing

Steve, very impressive repower. I just went to your web shots and very informative pictures. Do keep us posted on what you do and the results. Are you going to turn up (bomb)the engine?

I like what you did and how you did the AC, clutch brackets. Very neat and clean. This gives me more incentive to start my 53 GMC repower... .

:D

Nice ride! Where'd you find a Scout with a body that good? My dad bought a new Scout in '77. We drove the crap out of that thing. It had the 345 v8 with a two barrel and 4 speed. We put 190k miles on it and never had to do anything to the engine, but change fluids. It sure was a rust bucket though!!! Eventually the body was so shot, you could barely get the doors closed! And don't dare put the tail gate down, you'd never get it back up! Still to this day it had more power than the vortec 350 and got better mileage and it was a better 4 wheeler than anything I've ever been in.

Great job, definitely some things to look at with my conversion. Please let us know how the sound insulation works out.

Are you running a muffler, or just turbo back.

Thanks!!

Tim

No muffler, just a 3" exhaust for now. But I'm leaning to a Dyno-Max straight through design. The exhaust is a little too loud for my taste.

Steve

It looks great, how did the weight of the 4BT compare to the Nissan?, did your front ride height change much?

Nice job!

Looks like a first gen intercooler may be an easy bomb. If you have enough room between the radiator and grill. I couldn't tell by your pictures. With the intercooler in, you can turn up the fuel quite a bit without running into egt probs. Should help MPG too.

Fun project, enjoy!

Larry

Thanks again!

I have to belive that the SD33T is heavier that the 4BT. I use to have a better rake to the Scout, the rear was about 1. 5-2. 0 inches higher that the front. Now it sits almost level.

A aftercooler/intercooler would be a great idea but I didn't plan for it. (Darn!) There isn't room in front of the raditor now, I have the AC condencer there and still have to add the pusher fans too. But for futrue referance there is room if the engine is set back further than I had done. I positioned the engine 5. 5" from the firewall and it could move another 2-3" inches to the rear to accomadate the aftercooler. Oh well maybe next time.

Steve

I just ordered a 4bta for my 80 traveler(same color) from Neosho Truck Parts, what i'm wondering about is if it has air to water or air to air intercooling? I would like to leave some room for an intercooler. . what are some of your experiences bombing this engine? the nissan sd33t cannot take much boost or advance...

I would guess that it uses a air-to-air aftercooler? I haven't done any bombing with my 4BT, but would assume that the 4BT and the 4BTA would react to the same bombing procedures that have been applied to the 6BTA.

Steve

Well on startup and shutdown the little 4 banger rocks like its trying to jump out of the engine bay. Like any 4 cyl engine they don't have perfect primary and secondary balance that is inherent of the inline 6, so they rock a little bit. But I don't find it a problem and at speed I get more vibration from the stiff suspension than the engine. (Skyjacker 4").

Steve

got a/c ?

do you have a/c on that? I'm suposed to repower a ford van with a 4bt for a customer but have not found a 4bt with a a/c pump

anyone know if the dodge 6 brackets will fit?

Yes the 6B engine mounts will fit the 4B, If you have room to use them do, I didn't so I had to fab my own set for the AC. I think you will have to fab your mounts like I did if your installing AC.
