Competition Dueling Dodges!

Heading to work but can't stop thinknig bout this. :D

If I decrease my 60ft time will my MPH have a chance of improving? Obviously the time will. Or is 93 mph basically my "topend" now?

ANy other hints or tips to get a lil more "umph" ??? THanks

Off to work now!

Eric,

Your mph is an indication of your hp. Most likely it will not improve.

Your et however, definately you should be able to shave off 1 1/2 seconds off your time if you can get traction.

Colin,

At 32 lbs of boost, that is where i snapped my output shaft in the transmission. If you are trying to launch in 4wd , as some of the Dodge Ram owners have sucesssfully done, most of those guys have stayed below 15 lbs of boost.

I dont recommend guys launching in 4wd drive, as i have seen my many broken outshafts from this proceedure.

However , as you guys have selective hearing and will probably do this anyways, you, (mopar muscle, chris sutton, and few others) i predict you guys and your antics will prove very good for business.

Running down the quarter mile is actually quite safe for your truck.

Usually if you try to launch with too much boost you will blow away your tires and wont hurt your transmission or your truck.

I have had a lot of fun at the drag strip over the years, my kids grew up at the track, while it is fun it can come at a price if you're not careful and sometimes even if you are.

While at Norwalk Raceway Park in Northern Ohio this weekend for a Super Stock Event, my Plymouth got wounded:( so I talked the tech official into my putting my Super Stock car # on my dually and running in the Sportsman class. I had the only Dually in the lanes:D

Here is the score:

RUN 1 RUN 2 RUN 3

R/T . 591 . 535 . 457:mad:

60' 2. 845 2. 812 2. 807

330 7. 754 7. 736 7. 724

1/8 11. 816 11. 806 11. 822

MPH 60. 89 60. 57 60. 39

1000 15. 330 15. 316 15. 375

1/4 18. 337 18. 311 18. 434

MPH 74. 75 74. 87 73. 38

I was deep staging for reaction time, so ET's suffered a little, and the last run, after I saw the red light I turned the air on. I would like to be able to figure the HP for the truck, but my power to wieght ratio chart doesn't go into the 18 second zone. Quite a ride though, as I am used to staging at 3000 rpm and leaving the line with the front wheels up with a 1. 50 60 ft and running 122 mph. Only thing on the truck is "EZ" box--still has muffler, so I didn't think that was all bad, but my buddies "chipped up" PSD still out pulled me on the interstate hills coming home last night a midnight.

colin , if you try to launch at 32 psi in 4wd you will break your output shaft before the last yellow turns on . make sure your AAA is paid up for the tow home , been there , done that .

i have come out as high as 20 psi , but that was BEFORE i put in the DD3's , now i'm scared to go above 10psi , with the DTT 91% TC DD3's and my hot edge level 3 with an EZ thrown in for fun boost climbs much to fast , don't power brake above 1800 rpm wit ha DTT convertor , if you get to the stall RPM , the engine will not bog down like a gasser , the torque of the cummins takes over and can you say BROKEN TRANS ???

launching at the track at 5 psi in 2wd is different than on the street , at the track you are launching usually on a good rubber covered surface wit hsome traction aid added , not so on the street .

as far as shifting , leave it in drive , as long as your shift points are set properly just let it do its thing . the torque of a BOMBed cummins is the dodge automatic transmissions worst enemy .

kat you will probably loss a little MPH as your time picks up , the quicker you get to the end of the track the less time you have to build up speed . i'm running a best of 14. 38 at 91. 7 mph .

yes bill we are the trans worst enemy , but your companys bank accounts best friend :p

Depending on your tires the traction at the strip could be worse really sometimes alot worse from my expierience. I have manged a best of16. 20@84mph with my 5-speed truck with only an EZ and exhaust work. I launch at low rpm to avoid spinning the tires but when I go 2nd to 3rd I have hellacious tire spin, and even a little hitting 4th(Me good gear slammer ;) ) On the street I can spin pretty bad hitting third but nothing like on the strip. When I run radials on my car I can roll out slowly and then hammer it and hook up real good. Where if I do the same thing on the street I get instant 7000rpm and black marks until I run out of gears  .

On both my car and my truck my MPH is higher with more tirespin. Hooked my car will run 112mph and spinning on street tires it runs 113-114.

Then again if you hook a turbo diesel truck it might get different results as you might be able to hold more boost and build it up faster under a heavier load. Keep us Posted! You might just need to put a clutch in it ;) Hiperf360 got a 15. 33@88 the other day in a 01 SLT+ 3500 ETC. He can get off the line with almost no tire spin and his stock clutch helps keep it down on the gear changes lol. I was pretty shocked at the time considering the truck only has a Blue Chip FMS box and an EZ o

Thanks for the advice... . since this is a work truck/daily driver it's not gonna see strip action again... . certainly don't want to break anything as expensive as my trans... . tires are another issue:D

Thanks again... ... .....

FYI on weight!

Went down to the track to watch fri and drove across the scales with me (190) and a full tank..... 6335! Funny thing is I have a excab sonoma(4. 3) that I replaced with the Dodge and it get a whopping 1 MPG better around town..... Love my CTD!

Re: Shift RPM

what rpm does your transmission shift at when your floored:)

HVAC, I did not watch to see what RPM it shifted at while leaving the light. It did seem to shift early though. I did not feel like I had full engine RPM. When I orginially put in the TC and VB I tried adjusting the kick down for shift points but all full throttle shifts were at the same RPM no matter where I set the kick down  . All adjusting the kick down did for my truck was change the shift points at lower RPM's (lighter throttle)... So I set it where it would shift into the next gear early. for instance--- when I leave a light driving normal it will shift into the next gear at about 1600 RPM. I could adjust it to stay in gear longer, say to 2500 RPM before shifting. This is with very light throttle pressure. at presant it shifts into the next gear at about 1600 and OD at 40MPH (once I let off the throttle for a second) where the RPM will be at 1050 RPM once in OD. Seems to work good for driving around town.

I just don't notice any difference to what RPM it shifts at at full throttle by adjusting the Kick down. I think the full throttle shifts are the same as Gary C. Do I have it adjusted wrong?? Any help on the setup will be appreciated

Bill K. you have any comments.

I will try another drag from a light and monitor the RPM. I will also record at what full throttle RPM's it shifts at.

On my best runs I was leaving at around 15psi boost in 4wd, leaving on the last yellow. As I saw the light I'd mash the throttle and flip on my NOS/LPG switch and with about a 1/2 round of 4 tire spin away I went, 1. 703 60' time, 2900 to 3000 shift points in drive. Manually locking the tc at 25-2600 in 3rd and shift in od at 3000. I ran 12. 67@104. 66 mph which supprized the heck out of me. I even forgot to take it out of 4wd. :)

man you should have seen the look on the guys face in the next lane after he ran a 14. 8 in his mustang, he must have looked over my truck for 1/2 an hour. :)

Prolly gonna rain me out on going to the Strip Wed. We'll try for Friday looks like.

Whats everyone's shift points on the autos????

Any PE COMP users? What level and sublevel are you using? I am thinknig of using Level 5 and going to sublevel 3 or 4 maybe to delay some fueling until boost builds? Thoughts?

I wanna go faster :D

Tire Pressure?

Going to up the boost to 35psi, and hoping it will give me a better burn of fuel (Prolly won't but hey I can call it "wishful thinknig")!

Any other ideas? or Thoughts?

GEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZ!!! Eric... you got it bbaaaaaaad!!!!:D :D

All I can say is for me, launching in 4X , flattens your retinas for about 2 seconds... . after that, it's biz as usual... . I know now from the "Old Timers" (Bill K)... I ain't doin' it again... way too costly to repair... .....

Winter is approaching fast! SO I gotta get as much practice as I can before the tracks close. (If they do?) I wanna see what it'll do "now" and then over the winter come up with a plan to make it faster, trying to do this without any drugs for now. But I might give in next Spring and add a bit of propane to the mix, but that would be "Too easy" :D

I'm actually looking for a cheap "parts car" so to speak for when (not if) I break something on the truck. Looking for a 92 to 93 Eagle Talon, preferably under $3500.

I'll be sure to post how 4 wheel drive works for me, when I get a chance to try it. :D

Leave in drive

Put in the highest level for power.

4LBS of boost and roll on throttle for launch, 35lbs in reartires, that is how I got my 14. 1

Try 2 wheel drive.

I would be afraid to launch in 4 wheel and way more boost, might break an input shaft

You must crawl before you can walk.

Good luck

Kat,

Had no idea you were planning on taking your truck to the strip. I would have come up and watched and maybe talked my brother into taking his. I assume you are going to Scribner. If so your best bet (unless you are going on friday night when they put tons of traction compound down) is to leave with less boost, deep stage (pull forward will the top light goes out) and not roast them off the line. I had a 96 Impala SS that was having the same problems as you there. Your 60 foot times will improve if you can keep the power down. You MPH will go up some but not much. Don't do a burn out unless you have drag radials or slicks. Street tires get greasy and have less traction if you overheat them. I just spin them enough to get the sand and junk off at the line. HTH

Drop me an E-mail if you are going up again.

Matt

Deep staging will lower your ET. Deep staging is done to help get a better light. And of course your reaction time doesn't effect ET. For the best time just barely turn on the stage lights. And your gonna go ALOT faster with no tire spin even if your not on the smoke pedal all the way. Just try what he said and Roll into the throttle. Worth a shot!

Who wants to walk? I wanna go straight to "running" :D Hehe I am gonna play around alot with 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive next time out. Its not the input shaft I am worried about, its the output shaft that tends to snap.

I just wanna get as much practice in before the tracks close for winter.

I went to KIRC in Kansas City. Greg's PSD is down there as well as Floor It and BigYellowIron (thats who I went to hang out with). I jsut found out about Scribner a couple days ago, do you know when they allow "Test and Tune"??? I need to call and find out. I didn't do a burno out, but left plenty of tire on my fenders and exhaust pipe, I wanna try several things, one of them being "rolling" into the throttle vs mashing it to the floor. So many things to try, so little time.

Its rained out in KC tonight, and I can't get Friday night off so have to try again next Wed.

The track number is (402) 466-1759.

It's crappy don't expect much. The road to get there is sand and sucks big time. They usually have the test and tune on Friday's but I have been to a few Saturday ones. It's a week by week thing. Here is a webpage with some info about events and directions.

Eric it wasnt rained out last night I thought you were gonna call me. I went out for a little while but they were having problems at the track they blew a transformer so I only ran 2 times I was stock no chip on LPG and was running 15. 30 @ 87MPH which stunk I felt like I was on a sunday drive. If you wanna go Friday I could try but I was thinking about helping Adam work on his truck if he wants too. Oh well I gotta get some miles on the new trans Today is the day!!!!
