I have read the other post in this forum about how easy it is to change the fuel filter but I have some more questions that were not asked.

1. When you remove the threaded cover will fuel leak out?

2. Is it necessary to drain the canister and if so is the drain the black lift handle located at the bottom?

3. Will I be better off refilling the canister before priming with the lift pump?

If anyone can answer these questions I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks in advance... ..... Steve.

Steve... .

You should drain the canister. If you look at the length of the drain tube, it doesn't go down close enough to the ground to allow for a "tidy" flow into whatever catch container you choose to use. I went to a hardware store and bought a 24" piece of the same, clear hose ( can't 'umember the size, but you can take it right off and take it in ) also bought a double male connector... the kind with jagged, raised ends... can't remember the correct name of the connector, but you'll know it when you see it. I can connect my extra hose to the existing one and place it in an open jar. I take it off after I'm done.

Wipe off the outside of the lid and canister.

Loosen the filter housing cap. When it begins to spin, open the drain valve. It's the one you described.

Slowly pull up the filter from the housing. The filter is clipped/attatched to the lid. Once the "seal" is broken, more fuel will flow into the catch bottle.

Again, slowly pulling out the filter, you can put it in a baggie and unclip the filter from the lid. Less chance for a mess.

Use a lint-free cloth to wipe out the canister if it looks like it needs it.

Clip the new filter to the cap..... be sure you lubricate the O ring and that it seats properly.

Close the drain. Put some fuel in the housing, but leave enough room for the filter. Carefully screw the lid back on being careful not to cross-thread it. I think there is a torque spec for the lid, but I don't know it. I just went by feel... . pretty snug.

hope this helps...

Torque is 25 foot pounds max. —The spec. is molded into the cover. You'll likely do well at 15 foot pounds.

25'# on the cap? I have changed mine a couple of times now and I tighten the cap down until it come to the metal of the filter housing. I assume I'm going to tight on the cap. :(

The first filter change was done at a dealership ($96) and they had put it on tighter that I ever have. I almost couldn't get the top back off!
