first time diesel owner needs help

hello to all i have a silver 04 bone stock crew cab 4wd longbox with a 48re transmission. My problem is the other day my truck made some weird noise while accelerating onto hwy when i got off hwy and cam to a stop i had to stand on brakes to keep it from moving rpm was down to 450 engine acts like it going to die. i shift transmission into neutral rpms shoot up to 1200rpms than settles down to a smooth idle. When i put it back i gear same thing happens so question is do i have a engine problem or a transmission one. and what could possibly be wrong . Thanks for any and all help.

Sounds like the torque converter did not unlock. Try searching using "torque converter" because I remember reading a similar post. Sorry I can not offer more help... I am a stick guy.

First... Welcome to the TDR! I agree with DE Jeeper. How does it shift now? Is it real hard shifting? You don't say how many miles on the truck.

sorry my babe has 100835 mi was not having a lick of problems with it. No slippage shifted normal towed 24ft gn stock trailer every once in awhile. No code its hard for me to fathom why tc can just go s*** without symptoms of transmission failure. what do you think about the tc clutch solenoid going bad.

Rather than it being the TC itself, I would first look at what is supposed to control the Lock/Unlock. Whatever it is I would guess it is gonna be a whole lot less expensive than a trans removal.
