Finally made it around to Cummins

Hey guys first post and a dumb question I am about to order a 2019 3500 limited dually.

I drove four 3500 trucks and one single rear wheel 3500 am I crazy or does it seem like the air ride trucks drive really rough and I mean rough????????
I am also buying a Jayco 377RLBH fifth wheel camper with a pin weight of 2800 and a overall weight of 14000.

And yes I am getting the AISIN transmission AND 410 GEARING LOL.

Please give me a call to advise me guys
I just by the seat of the pants seem to feel the air truck rides bad especiallly in the single rear wheel 3500.

First thought is check air tire pressures. Probably grossly over inflated from the factory. I'm not well versed on dually air pressures but when the truck is empty (no payload, no towing) fronts should be around 70 and rears should be around 35-40. I'm sure dually owners will chime in and correct me on that.

Are you planning on towing heavier than 14k? If not, my gear choice would be 3.73. They are more than enough gearing for that weight and will net you a little better mileage

THIS IS WHAT I AM ORDERING.

The worst was the single rear wheel 3500 and mean the WORST.

X2; on this. The factory now has just one setting for tires do to big brother. All tires are aired to the max inflation pressure that is specified on the tire placard on the B-post of the drivers side door.
I run aftermarket tires on my truck and have eliminated the sensors, since I run these tires at my pressure requirements based on tire loading. For an improved ride when empty I would run the factory tires at 45 PSI.

Ok guys I prefer a single rear wheel truck and a plus is I can go thru the local 39 dollar a month carwash every day if I want too just to keep it clean.
The horrible ride is not coming from the front but from the back tires I like the megacab with the six foot four bed the most.
The below picture is a SRW 3500 with the Aisin and 1000 ft pds of torque and 410 gears.

Good catch on the tire size! 18's are definitely the way to go. Not only for ride comfort but cost and availability of sizes and brands down the road when purchasing new shoes. And if going SRW 3.73 is now the only available gear ratio which is good for your prescribed tow #'s.

I'd also do the air ride if I had the choice. That is not your issue of a harsh ride.

Wow ok I cant believe putting the rear tire pressure down to say 50psi would make any big difference but it does make sense guys.
Is the spring ride more easy on the neck or air more easy any personal experiences now I am only speaking SRW because my wife Cynthia has made the proclamation NO DUALLY EVER Again lol NEVER EVER LOL.

I had two 3500 duallys in the 90s actually I knew Scott Dagliesh who started the TDR.

Stuart

Ok I looked at the SRW 3500 Limited I drove the other day that HURT my NECK and it was a crewcab six foot four bed not a Megacab and it did have the as you guys mentioned 20 inch wheels so not as much air between the rubber and the ground.

Even if it has 18" wheels aired up to max pressure it will be a rough ride. I'm not 100% positive but I don't think the 20" wheels necessarily have a higher load rating than the 18's. If they do it is miniscule. In fact I just helped a friend buy new tires for his 2500 Silverado and was surprised to learn his OEM tire size with 20" wheels had a lesser load rating than my OEM size with 18" wheels. So there are some discrepancies.

For comparison sake my 275/70/18 carries a 3640 lb load rating @ 80 psi. That's 7280 lbs of tire capacity at the rear axle at max pressure. See how this can cause a harsh ride on an empty truck? There have been zero times I have had to air up to 80 psi in the rears to compensate for the loads I haul. The highest I've aired up to is 75, and that was likely over kill for what I tow but I didn't know exactly what I was going to have on the rear axle because I've never actually scaled it (15k lbs on a tag trailer).

Stuart

Don't forget fronts too. I've learned by scaling my loads that the front axle weights dont change enough to warrant a psi change when running a 5th wheel or gooseneck. I generally run 65psi in the front both loaded and unloaded.

I currently own a 2019 Limited, 3500 Crew Cab Dually, Long Bed, Max Tow, Tow Technology, etc.. Rears at 40 psi, fronts 80 psi, pulling 16' enclosed loaded trailer with approximately 1000 tongue weight, air ride is great empty or loaded. Haven't had a chance to pull the 5vr yet, can't imagine it to be anything but good.
