Finally made it around to Cummins

I know this is a thread about air ride, so I'll comment on that first: I would have liked to have factory air ride all the way around or at least on the rear of my 2017 Ram 5500. It weighs 12.2K lbs with 112 gal fuel. I priced air suspension by Kelderman for about $15K. I asked my wife of she wanted it, and she said nah. We're truck people and are ok with the truck riding like the road we're on.

Tires: 19.5 tires on the 5500 probably have the firmest ride of the tires offered on Ram trucks. The side walls are heavy and thick, the Hs are 14 ply rated. We run them 95 on fronts and 90 on rears all the time since the duty cycle of this truck is 95% towing heavy 21.2K Lb 5er.

As many have commented, I ran 65lbs fronts and 50lbs rears on my SRW trucks. I added Firestone air bags to my 03 2500 QC SB 4x4 and inflated them just as they would start taking some load off the leaf springs. Really improved the ride.

BOTTOM LINE: As mentioned, air suspension with aired down tires should provide a great ride.

May I suggest taking one more test drive, but get dealer to check and air down the tires just to see. Typing words is sometimes tough to get common understanding of what is a good ride and what isn't.

Cheers, Ron

Ok I have made my final picks for the truck and here it is and yes it will have the air ride.

Good choice on wheel size and color. Just so you know 4.10 is not available in SRW. Beginning in 2013 both 2500 and 3500 with the CTD was standard 3.42 gears. No option. As of model year 2019 Ram chose to get rid of the 3.42 in favor of 3.73, which I am all for personally. Many dealerships are not aware of this unless they are a high volume diesel dealer.

Yes my dealership I am working with is Kernersville Dodge in North Carolina they sell over 200 trucks a month so I guess they are a high volume dealer they said 4.10 is no problem.
AM I WRONG ABOUT THE 2019 68RFE HAVE THEY IMPROVED THE transmission AFTER ALL THE NIGHTMARES..............I WILL LEAVE THE ENGINE 100 PERCENT STOCK.

THE 410 GEARS SHOULD MAKE IT A TOWING BEAST MACHINE.

The RV I am looking at buying is 14000 dry.
So its AISIN all the way I guess?????

If you go with the 68RFE you won't get the HO 1K Cummins. The 68RFE is not a time bomb on a stock truck. The Aisin is certainly tougher, but also slower more deliberate shifting. That suits me fine, as I am not a drag racer. Kernersville does sell a lot of trucks, but I think they are wrong on the 4.10s on SRW. 3.73 is plenty of gear for a SRW truck.

68 is fine, they make up the vast majority of transmission in diesel equipped pick ups. Truth be told I actually prefer one now that I know the reliability behind a stock engine. Especially when one considers the up charge at sale and astronomical maintenance costs when comparing the two. The point is moot though if you ordered the 1000 lb ft engine you will have the Aisin.

Tell your dealership they owe you a steak dinner when they realize they don't know what they are talking about ;) It may actually make them do their job if money out of pocket is on the line.
Your SRW CTD will have 3.73.

So it is, and 4.10 is hell for such a light truck, the engine will scream all the way down the interstate begging for a higher gear.
3.73 i the way to go.

okay guys I'm using voice to text so I will check on that I believe there was something with the tow group that gets you a 410 something about the you get a fifth wheel you get to 410 ratio you get the 100,000 pounds of torque I don't know something like that all right well I'll check into it.

okay I remember it was the max tow package that got you the fifth wheel hitch and 410 ratio and I think the thousand foot pounds of torque or something like that and we'll see.

Is the 68rfe now pretty good if you match it with a 410 gear ratio I remember that reading like a year ago that people were blowing them up like crazy but again I'm just going to be using a stock truck you know single rear wheel but I don't know if the 68rfe will come with a 410 gear in a single rear wheel truck I guess we can find out somehow but I'll probably just get the ice and I guess maybe if I want to save myself for money I could get the 68rfe with with the 410?????

so if that is the case I would definitely go with the icing trancy with transmission with the 373 it's a much heavier duty transmission so it probably do better if I would have the 68rfe I would probably be more preferential to go with the 4:10 because it would take more pressure off the transmission.

There is NO 4.10 for the SRW Diesel anymore, not for the Aisin and not for the RFE.
Believe it or not.
And for your tiny Trailer the standard Engine with the RFE is more then stout enough, it will last as long as you own the Truck. The RFE is a profen solid transmission that last.

The 1000FT Engine with the Aisin is to pull more then 40000lb GCW - and not for recreational fun dutys - its a work horse and you pay for that stuff, that you never will miss.

I have a 3500 Auto-Level, it’s FANTASTIC! It’s not air ride, but it does ride softer due to the leaf spring rates.

It does not even compare to the full spring suspension. The roughness must be a tire pressure thing where the softer springs don’t like too much air in the tires. That being said, even empty at 80 psi in the rears it rides like a dream.

No 4.10’s on a SRW truck, thou last I looked the website let you configure it that way....

Personally I’d get the Aisin, but the 68RFE seems to work well for those who have it.

Yes the Ram site will let you add 410 but like you guys have said it will be a 373 unless you get the MaxTow and that does include the Dually Wheels oh well its Aisin and 373 for me I guess lol.
I think the 1000 foot pounds SRW with the 373 and Aisin should do me just fine and have plenty of torque.
I was just told by a guy that if I get the 68rfe make sure to spec the 410 as it will put less stress on the transmission in the end.
Thats just what the guy said he works for one of these transmission companys and he makes his living on blowing up 68rfe trucks lol.
