Last week I got to take my 2 week old 06 out on its maiden tow. I traded off an 03 2500 QC LB on the 06 3500 QC LB. The 03 had a full 4" Banks exhaust, AFE PG7 intake, and Quadzilla Xzillaraider (normally off when towing or on 30hp setting). Both have the same hitch installed (albeit, installed differently), and the only other upgrades were a Brakesmart trailer brake controller, and the Jake Brake.

The trailer is a Keystone Laredo 29RL (about 31' long, 9700 lbs loaded, 1400lb hitch weight).

RIDE QUALITY:

Empty: The 3500 rides just like the 03 2500. Really no difference at all.

Loaded :( I really didnt expect it to be as different as it was. In the 03, I never felt the bumps, or the expansion joints, and trips in it were very enjoyable. The 06 really took the enjoyment out of the drive across the mountains. When I hooked up the trailer, the suspension settled 2" (the 2500 settled about 2. 5"). I'm seriously going to look at some aftermarket items to help with this. Either that, or I need to let the wife load more in the trailer!

I have to add that the 3500 did feel more stable going around corners.

And mileage this trip was 10. 2. The 03 nailed 11. 9 every trip. (thats hand calculated).

POWER:

Empty: The power running around town feels a little more responsive than the 03 did (stock vs stock)

Loaded: The 06 feels like it comes from a standstill much easier than the 03. Cruising on the interstate I would have to give the nod to the 06, biggest improvement is the addition of the tow/haul mode. Pulling the mountains, I give the 03 a definitive edge. While the shifting is vastly improved (the 06 actually sifts down when you expect it to!!!! Oo. ), I was 10+ mph slower pulling the pass than I did with the 03. I actually had to pull over and let cars go by this trip - something I havent had to do since my introduction to the dark side! I know the 06 has higher claimed torque, but the curves must be different enough that with my particular load and driving style, that I was able to better use the torque of the 305/555. Even the DW mentioned that I seemed to be working it a lot harder than I did the old truck. (sounds to me like she gave her blessing for bombs, right!?!?!)

TRANSMISSION:

Whatever changes they made to the 48RE are very good. It shifts reliably, and when expected.

OTHER:

The Jake Brake is simply put, AWESOME. Easy to use, not too loud.

I definitly have to get a little louder exhaust put on. It was at times hard to hear what exactly the motor was doing. Granted, I did enjoy the quieter ride, but I felt like I was towing blind (I dont have guages installed yet either).

The new RAK stereo sucks. Very flat sound. Wont achieve the same volume that my 03 would - and I wouldnt want it to based on how crummy it sounds.

The Brakesmart brake control is also very well worth the investment. Truck and trailer seemed to brake in unison. I did not once feel that 2 second delay, and after coming to a complete stop, the trailer brakes released when I took my foot off the pedal, not a second or two later.

Windnoise is decreased, as was the upper door buffet from cross winds. Cudos to the quieter ride.

Overhead Temp guage takes a LONG time to generate an accurate reading after starting off. On the 03, I got instantanious accurate readings. I'd guess that it takes a good five minutes of drive time to get one out of the 06.

Did you air up the tires? Mine came from dealer with 40psi in the tires. This makes it ride nicer during the test drive. I aired the front to 75psi,rear to 65 psi. Fuel mileage went up,ride quality empty went down (dually) I want the fuel economy right now. Just my . 02.

Yes, I pumped them up to 75/70 also (Thats what I ran on the 2500). For the ride home, I dropped them down to 70/65 to see if it helped the ride quality at all.

it seems you are happy with it overall. one thing that it might be with the ride is the overloads. your old 2500 didnt have them and your 3500 does. a couple of options here... air bags could help, but also tend to be able to stiffen up a ride a bit.

i am thinking about removing the overloads from my truck, buying 2 spare air bags to cary with me and the tools needed to change them out. this will give me a softer ride in all conditions. i also want an in cab controller.

i have a short box, so expansion joints are always a problem for me... .

I just had my first tow this weekend with the new rig. Have to agree, the Jake Brake/Auto transmission combo in the 06 is really great. .

Will slow itself down from 60-20 with no service breaks in not too ling of distance. .

Just put on 4000 miles towing a 10K 5th wheel from Chgo to Yellowstone and the Tetons. Have to say the 06 is a fine machine. Tows nicer that my 03 2500 but I attribite some of the better ride to the longer wheelbase of the Mega cab. About 3 MPG better towing the same trailer than the 03, add this to the reworked transmission. Jake brake was a real help in some of the areas with steeper grades. had all the power I needed when I needed it. Worked flawlessly overall. Glad I upgraded from the 03 2500 to the 3500 Mega cab and added the jake. :)

Did you go to pacific beach?

Nope - went to the state park at Winthrop. Freakin HOT! Spent most of the week tryin to find shade. We dont go to Pacific Beach until Labor Day. Do you still head out there for that weekend?

Yes, overall I am happy with the truck. The only real issue I have is the ride quality, and I dont feel that somehting is wrong with the rig, I just didnt think about there being a difference loaded. One other thing that I think added considerable "change" to the feel of the ride was the location of the hitch. My 03 had the brackets welded in place by a local shop that didnt have a clue about the no welding warranty issue. The hitch point sat about 4" in front of the axle centerline. The new bolt on brackets (by Husky) didnt give the shop a choice in location, and the hitch is now directly over the center of the axel. That would attribute to the slight amount of porpoising that I experienced.

The mileage difference could be attributed to me not being familiar with the truck (I was towing blind - no guages, could barely hear the exhaust). Plus it only has 800 miles on it now. I'm not concerned about this yet.

As far as getting the ride smoother when loaded, I wonder if I got a spray in liner installed, plus installing my roll'nlock bed cover, if that would add enough weight to take the harshness out of it. Might have to haul some dirt around to test!

I would say with your pin hitch being back farther than your 03 is why the ride feels different. Being a truck driver for 31yrs I have learned that sliding a fifth wheel forward or backward depending on load can make all the difference in the world how it rides. Seeing as you can't slide the hitch, try putting a little more cargo up front. You could also spend $$$ for an air ride hitch or pin box which would take out any bucking.

on edit: I see you have a huskey sliding hitch. Will that allow you to adjust where the pin sits?

I was actually thinking the same thing. I know there aren't any more holes FWD of where it sits now, but maybe I can take it apart and reverse the legs to give me a spot a couple inches ahead of where it is.
