Well I got the call today I was waiting for. I have a job transporting a friends famous Porsche 911 racecar to Chicago to its new owner. This car was the second of 2 that were built by Dave Klyme at Fabcar in Indianapolis. This car is a mid-engine 911. Both were raced in Sportscar,IMSA including the 12 hours of Sebring and the 24 hours of Daytona. These cars were originally looked at by the Porsche factory for they were in the idea stage of building there now infamous Porsche 911 GT1 that won the 24 hrs of LeMans. This car has its plcae in history. Unfortunatley my friend sold his 13 car dealerships to Roger Penske a few years back and has retired from racing all together. He is a past Camel Gt champion in the past era of 962's and Nissans Gt cars. He has tried to sell the car the last few years to no avail. Now its sold and I have to deliver with my first pull coming with many new mods installed by Michael at AutoWurks Diesel.

I get the truck back in a day or two. The new mods consist off installing new BD 4" exhaust and brake,AutoMeter Ultra Light gauges, Gov. spring kit, delivery vavles,370 injectors, Mag-Hytec, 332/700 camplate, 16cm2 housing, new Carter lift pump, new Northwest Mudflaps, and Michaels' Custom dynamic pump timming around 15. 5 degrees.

This tow should be a real joy. Can't think of a better way than a roadtrip to enjoy my new mods. Plus the tow is helping pay for some of them. I will post later what my experience is with the trip and the new mods.

Any of you guys Porsche nuts I would be happy to talk to you more about this special car. I have pics from previous trips transporting this car to the 50/50 at the Glen.

Griff, don't be a stranger, maybe you can take I-70 back to Jersey, come hang out with some GLTDR members in Indy, let us know.

Griff, I know those cars! Sadly, a little out of my pocketbook range. . after racing a 911 for a bunch of years and a few national titles in auto-X , hillclimbs and time trials, I put my faith in a 914/6... gotta love that mid-engine! The fella who built my 911 cage was a fabricator for Mr. Klym, and also built such cars as the Saleen Mustang racers, and worked in England for Team Lotus! Dave's been around a long time and has had his hand in a lot of historic and interresting cars... and although we miss the GTP days (come to Sebring in March and watch them all run again!) there are also some pretty neat cars out there: The Exxon "Tiger Car" 993 (built and raced by my shop), and Alex Job's team cars. Alex used to run the 914 I now own... . love to hear more on new and previous owners of your precious cargo!!

When are you guys in the GLRTDR getting together? I found out I probably won't get my ride back until next mon. or tues. So middle to late next week is when I will out that way. I would love to make some time and meet some of you.

Big Dummy? Hm? Guess who that is. Is that my old truck calling? Is it calling me a big dummy, or did I sell it to a big dummy? Well anyway I can't wait to compare towing this load with the new truck as compared to the old one. Let you know how it turns out.

I know Alex as well. From my years attending the 24 hours and Sebring I got to know some of his crew as well. Trevor and Peter Dawe, as well as Phil and Mike of Alex's crew are all real top notch parts of the success that AJR Racing has had the last few years. Alex ran this car as well as the first mid-engine that dave built the year before.

Probably the best time was the 50/50 though. With no pressure of a race we had a great time at the 50/50 at the GLEN. I worked with Alex and his crew for that week. He ran the cars they were winning with that year with Daryl Havens and Cort Wagner as well as the 911 we brought. We were trying to sell it. Only Jochen Rohr was interested. He had the 911 GT1 there that week and was just starting to play with it. So we did not move it. Alex is a class guy and I was very happy for his well deserved overdue success he's had the last few years.

What region do you run in? Maybe we can meet up sometime at an event. I go from LimeRock to Summit and out to Mid-Ohio. With the purchase of a new slide in soon I hope to get back to Sebring and roebling and get a little farther out west. I would also like to get up to Mosport this year. Not sure yet. GOTTA get down to the new VIR first!

Gotta go feed the new baby. CYA #ad

Well I picked up the truck yesterday. I drove down 280 in bumper to bumper traffic in rush hour. All the while trailering my Durango home. Did I mention is was raining alot.

So the first impressions with all this new found power and torgue is interesting to say the least. The BD brake is great. The exhaust w/o muffler is great. Its sound like a Pete or something. While trailering I'd have all 4 wheels spinning with light pedal in 3rd and 4th gears. I really had to baby it in the rain. So that was the first 45 minutes of a 3:15 ride home.

I got out to the NJ TP @ 15W(Newark Airport). 2 lanes, dark, rush hour with no room anywhere. Trucks, cars, concrete median, you get the idea. So after about a mile or 2 I am on an elevated section of road, climbing slightly. I have concrete median on one side 2 ft away and tractor trailer on the other. Light pedal 3rd gear. ALL OF A SUDDEN POP, HISS, SNAP. OK never heard that before. No where to go. OK its not a tire on the trailer. Not one on the truck. Was it the truck next to me. HMM? Everything seems fine right. Check gauges and no boost, or power. Immeadiatly I think head gaskit. Just a normal reaction from owning gassers. No, not that. Don't know. I drive slow for another mile or two and find some road to pull over. Its now around 4:30 and I get on the cell phone to Michael. He said probably a line blew off the intercooler. I removed everything out of the truck 2 weeks ago when I had droped it off. So no flashlight or even screwdriver. Anyway I get out in the rain and find that a factory band clamp below the turbo on the intercooler line just blew apart. The hose if off and everything. After a little elbow grease I get it back on and down the road I go slowly. What a drag. It was like driving a gasser. No boost, no power = long wet miserable drive home. 55 MPH, when I could. Much longer than it should have taken to get home.

Anyway to finish up. I go to the Rice and Holdup truck center this morning and get 2 Ford band clamps with these real trick looking spring set ups for 9. 50 each. If I did'nt own fords before I might have a problem with this. But thats all they had to fix it with. With all the money I just spent I don't care if it would have said Playtex on it. I wanted my power back.

Well its back and pretty cool. Don't know for sure the full potential becuase it STILL RAINING. I have to plow tonight. I need to recoup some money spent. So it will be interesting to see how it performs. All that I can say is #ad
!

I am leaving in a few days for the roadtrip. I can't wait to see how the truck performs then. I will however have a complete set of tools with me. So hopefully only good suprises.

I guess I have to go update my signature.

Griff,
I am reliving my own life through your posts. I too had an explosive intercooler hose problem, one that would not go away. On mine the clamp failed and the hose too blew right off. New clamp, tight again, and POOF!--off again. This kept on occurring over a two week period until I made a startling discovery... ... when the hose blew, the rubber bellows stretched out and was larger in inside diameter than when new. It was the problem that kept on blowing hoses off. I replaced the rubber piece with a new one and it never showed its ugly face again.

Anyway our trip was fine. Had alot of stuff to take. Many tires and wheels, as well as a set of extra bodywork. We hit some lake effect snow around Gary Indiana. Trucks and cars were going off the road everywhere. In 5 th the rear wheels started spinning and I then backed it down to 50 for a while. Got to a place called Perfect Power around 6:30pm. Went right thru Chicago during rush hour. Not to bad. It took like 13. 5 hours I think. The owner and purchaser's name was Sol something. Nice guy. Nice shop. Does alot of Club racing stuff. He showed us all around, his dyno, cars and some trick 4 speeds that he builds.

Anyway we drove down to my friends house about 45 minutes from Sol's. We had a couple of Bass ale's waiting for us. They tasted so good because we really did not eat anything other than some granola and pretzels all day. He made us a nice dinner and we went to sleep at 10 thier time and woke up at 3:30 and left for home. I drove the whole way both directions. 821 miles on the way back. I really flew home. We averaged almost 64 miles an hour on the way back. We were home in 13 hours. No problems really. I lost my dash lights and new gauge lights around 7:00am. So I really did not miss them. They blew as I flashed a trucker thanks for letting us over. We passed so many cars and trucks. The new Mods are awesome. The truck really hauls some *** . I will have to get a new clutch though. I knew I was going to be on the borderline of clutch slippage with all the work we did. I also have to put a muffler on. I did the 4" straight pipe thing. And when towing it really has a loud drone. Although it has sweet spots at 75 and 85 mph. The drone just goes away. I think I would have a hard time explaining this to an officer though.

The truck ran real well with all the work done by AWD. Nobody beat me out of a toll booth. It was fun passing cars and trucks at will, all the while towing a 24 ft haulmark.

Fun trip. No problems. Used alot of diesel. I drive with a heavy foot now with all the new power. Its real fun. I am just going to have to be careful. I have no tickets or points. I do have a few friends who are cops and an uncle who is a NJ trooper. So that usually gets me off. I gotta be lucky too becuase this thing really hauls *** now.

Griff,
I pull the AWD race truck and trailer with my 2500, 6" unmuffled exhaust and all. Once I get over 70, she's nice and quiet. Never got any problems from any fellow officers on the road. They all just think that it's just another loud diesel. The muffler has been off mine for four years now. Never to go back on again.

Well Chris, I have a 10 week old son and we are getting a new slide in camper within the month and believe me its just too loud. First off I don't hear all that well in my left ear. Second, I have dual B&B's 4. 5" outlets on my Porsche 911 racecar and would not trade them for anything. I LIKE IT LOUD! But in this case I can't appreciate my new killer stereo system like I did before the install. So i have to do something to quiet the resonance. We will be taking lon trips now and it just won't be enjoyable with the large dronning noise.

To each his own. Hope to meet you soon.
