My cruise used to work perfect about a year ago then started hauling butt when I would hit set. It would over shoot up to 15 over maybe more if I let it. It would eventually settle down and work fine. If I hit cancel then resume a while later it would over shoot just as bad. I finally replaced the servo today and so far it's working perfectly again, although I have not tested it much yet but time will tell. Wow this has been bugging me bad, it made it almost unusable and I live on the road! Cost only $32. 21 ($42. 95 list). I should have done this LONG ago. :D

Did you get Servo from Dodge? Mine has been doing same thing,worse when weather is real cold. Thanks in advance John.
 
I've been putting up with the same thing for about 3 years because the two closest dealers to me said there was nothing I could do. At about 40,000 miles a year I would really like to have my c. c. back.
 
Yes I got it from the dealer, part number 4669979 for my '98 12 valve. I don't know what if any other years this fits. It's a vacuum operated unit so it wouldn't help you out redram3 since I'm guessing you have a 24 valve (98. 5), which is electronically controlled. I have read that boosting the power on 24 valves can cause cruise problems. There are all kinds of other things that can cause problems too in both 12 and 24 valves and I really didn't know what my problem was but had read that replacing the servo solved this problem for some and it was cheap so figured I would try it. Unhooking the batteries, which reset the PCM, fixed the problem for some I read. So far it is working fine and I sure hope it keeps it up.
 
Yeah I have the 24 valve,damn computers it seems to work well when weather is warmer. Oh well summer is comming,thanks for info Mark. John;
 
CP98, is the vacuum operated servo unit the one under the driver side battery?? I'm having trouble with mine ( doesn't work at all ), and at that price, I'll try that.
 
Yes it's the unit under the battery. I was able to change mine without removing the battery. It's a bit of a pain trying to get both hands in there to unplug stuff but can be done, unless you have real big hands then maybe not.

Thanks for the tip CumminsPower98! I just got a '98 12-valve and mine does the exact same thing. Once it settles into the right speed though it's a bit jerky maintaining it. I'll give the servo replacement a try.

Are you running a fuel plate? My cruise worked great with the stock plate but I noticed it surges ever since I changed to a #10 fuel plate.
 
I'm at about 300 RWHP with many mods and the cruise worked fine for several years then all of a sudden started acting up and just got worse and worse.
 
My CC engages VERY slowly :rolleyes: I can turn it on hit set and it won't engage for a long time. I can speed it up just a little if I hit accel then his coast, but its still not very fast at all.



Does this sound like a failing CC servo? I've been wondering how to fix it ever since I bought it. :(
 
I suppose it's possible the servo is bad but since it's slow to engage I would start by making sure there are no vacuum leaks up to the servo.
 
The cruise control on my '99 24v acts the same way as CP98. If I work with it long enough it will keep a steady speed. But I am really tired of it. Anyone else have this problem with the 24v and have any ideas where I should start looking for a fix? It does not code a C. C. problem.
 
Mind is doing the same thing when cold weather comes on. I had the servo replace once under warranty. Now I know how much it going to cost without warrnanty. Thanks for the info.
 
Yes, thanks for mentioning that. Here is the TSB with info on how to do this recalibration. It says it's for '94-'96. I tried it on mine several times and it had no affect whatsoever. You guys with the years this covers might want to try it. http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1995/08-16-95A.htm

Mine seems OK then slowly creep up about 5-8 MPH.

If I slow it down with the CC controls, it will go wayyy slow.

It sort of overshoots the speed no matter if youre speeding up or slowing down.

All is better once it's been running for 20 minutes or so.

Could this be the same thing?

It's definetly worse in the cold weather.

My '99 does the same thing - and it is worse when cold. Has been going on for about 2 years, before the edge EZ was installed. Definitely interested if someone knows about a fix for the 24v.
 
Actually, for a number of years, the 24v engines did use vacuum.

And yeah, when we start bumping up the power, we get surging problems. The easiest solution for us is to put a needle vavle on the vacuum line to the unit, and it will slow down the reaction time for the CC. It doesn't solve overspeeding if it's as bad as 15mph though. That is the unit failing.
