I am looking at a 98 24v 3500 quad cab 4X4. It drove out alright but i am fixing to take it out longer and run a fine tooth comb over it. Noticed the exhaust manifold had a 4in crack in it just before the turbo. is this a common problem or one of those tell tail signs its has been abused? It has never had a Gooseneck or fifth put in it, The receiver hitch is a little necked out so it has pulled though. I am familiar with 12v trucks. But here comes the kicker, the truck has 211,000 miles on it. no smoke but power was not quite what I was expecting. A little feed back would be a real big help. oh... . asking $13,000 for it. Does that even seem fair. What do I need to look for.

If it's a 98, you're going to have to look and see if it's a 53 block. A crack in the exhaust manifold will happen; that's what all those aftermarket manifolds help prevent. If the power seems low, check the codes, could be a lift pump or VP-44 on the fritz. Otherwise, the 24 valve trucks have a lot of the same issues as 12 valve trucks (brake pull, steering slop, bad track bars, etc. ). If it's a high mileage truck like this is, check the wheel bearings, ball joints, etc. to make sure wear isn't excessive there. For me, $13000 for 212,000 miles seems close to maybe a touch high. But's that just an opinion there. If you're gonna replace the manifold anyway, it might not be a big deal.

Crack in Manifold is normal, You can either weld it, or replace it with an ATS unit. On power check Fuel PSI at the VP or the output from the filter and make sure it is 15 psi idle. Check for play in steering box and assocated front end joints, Tie rod ends, ball joints, trac bar. As far as price I paid 18,000 for a 01 with 120k a year ago.

i have a 98 24v... . it's been a pretty good truck but i would not pay anywhere near 13000 for a truck with those miles and obvious towing signs..... i say put that 13000 into your 12v and it'll be a BEAST!!!! or keep shopping for a trucko with less miles. also, if you want a 24v, look for a 2002..... fewer bugs. actually that last statement is just something i read on a previous thread but does make sense.

good luck
