Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday told dealers to temporarily stop selling certain 2008 F-series Super Duty diesel pickups after receiving reports of flames shooting out of the vehicle's tailpipe.

Ford said it was recalling 37,400 F-Series Super Duty trucks with 6. 4-liter diesel engines. The majority of the pickups – 29,000 – were still on dealer lots, the automaker said.

Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said it received three reports of flames coming from the truck's tailpipe, caused by leaking fuel that ignited in the exhaust system's diesel particulate filter near the tailpipe.

"It's really something that we noticed early on and we're moving swiftly to fix the problem," Jarvis said.

There have been no injuries or vehicle fires connected to the recall. There has been one report of a grass fire in Texas that was quickly extinguished, he said.

Jarvis said the flames could only occur in engines with leaking fluids, which he said was very rare. Two of the complaints involved leaking fuel injectors and the other involved leaks coming from a crack in the turbocharger shaft.

The automaker will have dealers upgrade software for the powertrain control module, which will power down the engine under higher-than-expected temperatures in the diesel particulate filter. Similar software updates will take place at the Louisville, Ky. , plant where the trucks are built.

Jarvis said the stop sale order should only last a few days as dealers reprogram the software. Owners of the remaining 8,400 trucks will be notified about the recall in early April and will be able to have the software upgrade at no charge.

In a separate action, fewer than 10,000 of the trucks will have the battery cable rerouted to avoid chafing against a shield in the engine compartment that prevents water and mud from getting into the engine.

Ford said the recall does not affect gasoline-powered pickups or those with 6. 0-liter or 7. 3-liter diesel engines.

From CNNMoney:

The software upgrade will reset the powertrain control module on the Ford trucks. In cases where the system detects unusually high temperatures in the diesel particulate filter, the control module will power down the vehicle.

The aim is to allow drivers to pull safely to the side of the road to allow it to cool before proceeding, Jarvis said.

Check out the part in blue! "This is the captain speaking. We'll be pulling off to the side of I-5 through Portland while our DPF cools down. Don't worry about the swaying bridge and large amount of traffic. Have a nice day and thank you for flying Ford. "

:-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf ... Looks like the moderators on the Ford site are already deleting the bad news as it comes in!!

I am so envious of these guys.

Back in the 50's we had to modify our cars to blow flames!! Now it is a factory installed fun factor!

Does anyone know the cost of this option?

LOL

they have a super duty add on the front page of yahoo that just begs to be photoshopped but it'll be many hours before i get home and it will be gone, theres a front end pic with a button that says "kick the tires" needs a flame and a "and light the fires" to complete :-laf

I was thinking the same thing... . but I don't have photoshop nor do I know how to use it and I'm also at work...

I know this is a little off topic from the 6. 4 flames out the tail pipe, but did International - Navistar halt production on the 6. 4's already. I have a buddy whose a die hard ford guy and he owns a 06 6. 0 F-350 king ranch. He was telling me that International - Navistar halted production of the 6. 4. Is this true ?!? And if so what happened !?!

The stopped production was over a contract dispute with Ford. The courts ordered them to start production again, and Ford had to pay without deductions for the disputed claims.

heres my amature photoshop stab at a image from the ferd site

this could be fun lets see other ideas Oo.

ps i know i missed a m, now.

Pretty good! While we're looking at SD ads, has anyone else noticed that in EVERY SINGLE Ford SD add that shows a front view of the truck, the front wheels are aligned with the OUTSIDE dually wheels?

Apparently it's a consequence of the camera angle, but it just seems strange to me.

Pickuptruck.com article.

This sentence from that pointer was interesting:

Some 37,000 trucks impacted by the recall will receive a software upgrade to reduce engine load when temperatures in the soot trap get too high.

HMMmmmm - wouldn't that high temp in the soot trap usually occur when the truck is under heavy loads? Just what ANY truck owner wants - a truck that BACKS OFF power delivery just when you need it most... :-laf

Should make an RV pulling contest with one in the hills interesting... ;) :-laf

Personally, I'm amazed that they're doing this. They're obviously assuming the fire problem will be very rare.

3 trucks so far out of about 8400 is ~0. 04%. Even if you assume there were actually 30 fires and not all of them were noticed or reported, that's still only 0. 4% of trucks.

From a statistical standpoint, this is probably not anything to worry about. From a public perception standpoint, however, I can't imagine things being any worse for Ford.
