Strange sight

Alaskan Campers?

One of the large RV chains I deal with just called. they have someone trying to trade a 2001 Artic Fox Slide in camper with slide out and generator. Wholesale is in the low teens and retail is in the high teens... ... ... ... ... ... . the guy still owes TWENTY TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS on this unit. This is not an offer to sell..... it is FYI. I have no interest in this glorified portable dog house and have never recieved the revelation as to why people would want one. If anyone out there in TDR land has an interest in this thing I will be glad to run interference for you.

Do you not like campers or just not the Artic Fox line? I personally have no need for a camper, but they come in handy for the fisherman and water ski crowd who have a boat to tow.

Chris

I love campers! I am in the RV biz. I have never cared for slide in cab over campers. They are too small and now cost lots of money. If you want to tow a boat, buy a 24 to 27' 5er and tow the boat behind it. I know there are folks that like to take their campers and go where even billy-goats can't go and that's great! But to spend $25 to $30 grand on a slide in is something else. But, thats why they make black and red and yellow ones. Artic Fox is a great unit. We just don't see many slide ins in our area. Therefore, that is why I made the post regarding the unit. If they trade for it, someone can steal it!

The Artic Fox is a very nice unit, but it is very heavy. That is why I went for a Summerwind. The campers with slideouts are reasonable room. It is all a compromise. I use to have a 5er but taking it to coastal towns became quite a hassle, resticted parking, can't find a place to park, and trying to drive those small streets. With my setup I can park almost anywhere that a standard pickup can. :D

I need a glorified doghouse!

Barry of Weatherford?

I am interested but how heavy? I have 2500 and want to stay under 3,000 on slide-in.

I have already told you more than I know. (lack of information has never slowed me down) Waiting to hear back from dealer when he gets closer on his deal.

Arctic Fox

:D I Have a arctic fox 5er and really enjoy it. but like you been saying it is very heavy, if you compair it to another brand . . you can count on at least 500 or more pounds. Oo. :D

I have a 2000 model Arctic Fox that I paid $25,000. 00 total for including tax, license etc. It has all the bells and whistles including generator, air conditioner etc. I weighed the truck and camper at a highway scale and it came to 12,950 lbs I would say I am a bit over weight. I would say the camper is pushing 5,000 lbs loaded. The 3500 dually handles it well.

I haven't had to make any emergency stops so I don't know how much extra it takes to stop it with the camper on. I try not to get myself into a position where I have to make emergency stops. I did have to leave the road one time while pulling the fiver. A semi was passing on a curve on a two lane road. I got the name of his company and called his office and reported him. Don't know if it did any good or not.

hmm my post/reply went away

Yeah just looking at the weights for even the lightest Artic Fox with a generator is over 3500# before adding gear or people too much for my 3/4 ton truck.

I guess I will go the Big Foot route as they have one that is about 3000 and I feel more comfortable with that.

In terms of the BigFoot campers, also check out the Northern Lite line of campers. BigFoot and Northern Lite used to be two partners who pioneered the two piece construction in truck campers as one of them was a boat builder... ... . Anyway, they are now competitors and have very similar options. The Northern Lite offers a 2 door, 3-way fridge! I toured the Northern Lite manufacturing plant last fall and was very impressed with the quality of the construction. I am considering a NL over a BF for the simple reason that the NL offers a model inbetween a full basement and no basement. Please see the following links for more detail:

I think I looked at the Northern Lite at a show  And looking at the website it looks like they are missing the one thing I have to have which is generator. I guess I will call and verify that they do not offer one.

I like the idea of no basement; lower entry, lower profile, better MPG, etc; and the fiberglass "boat" construction, but I need the generator and AC here in Texas.

We have a Artic Fox 990, posted weight is 3120 wet, I'm guessing we put 300lbs of stuff so we are up around 3500 lbs. We were hauling with a 2500 quad cab untill some moron hit us. After the accident we took the option of up grading to the 3500 2002 HP output, six speed truck. Both of us are much happier the 3500 handles the weight light years better. The fox is a very nice unit, this our first camper so we don't have much to compare it to other than comments from people who seem to like the looks and finish. Nothing major has broken, we have two years and quite few miles, still satisfied.
