I am in the planning stage for next years big camping trip. We are thinking of going to Yellowstone, pulling our 5th wheel trailer. Coming from the midwest (MO) I need some advice on where to stay, which campgrounds are good and not so good or any site seeing that would be recommended. The internet is only so-so I would feel better hearing it from a fellow TDR member.

I went to Yellowstone last August. We stayed at Bridge Bay campground inside the park.



It was very nice but has no hookups. We aren't the type to hang out around the trailer much so next time we will probably stay at Fishing Bridge. It's pretty much a parking lot, but it has hookups so the wife and kids can all shower each day. If you are staying at Bridge Bay and want to use their showers you need to drive to Fishing Bridge and pay like $4/each.



Next time I also plan to spend a couple more days in the park. We only spent about 3 days there. We then headed south to Jackson Wyoming just for the heck of it and relaxed there for a couple days. When in town there we stayed at the Virginian RV Park right in town. Kinda spendy, but close to town.

After a few days in the trailer, I need a shower too. For some reason my wife will not use the shower in the trailer. I have used ours many times.



Don't they have some rule about hard side trailers in the park too?

I would stay in the park just so that you are there each day. That is JMO though

I like my shower too, but can do without more so then the kids who are in the dirt every day.



There may be a rule about hard sided trailers, but they allow tents so explain that one.

We were in Yellowstone in May before the campgrounds in the park were open... . we stayed in a nice place, a good sam park on the river at the North Entrance to the park... we'd go back to them for sure...

We live 500 miles to the north entrance... But there are some nice spots in the park... . you just need to go to their web sight. .

Try this site for RV park reviews. It is comments from campers and have found it so useful I stopped buying the Woodalls guide.



Stayed in West Yellowstone,Montana When we were there 3 years ago. Sort of central to the Park, we stayed at Grizzly RV park see link below. Great park just make sure you plan on 4-5 days minimum. Also, the night ranger programs/ lectures were quite enjoyable.

Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park and Cabins

I'm pretty sure my wife and 2 girls will want a shower more often than not. Luckily the 5th wheel has one. So I think I would prefer a campground with full hook ups. I looked at the Grizzly site they look pretty nice, now all I have to do is save enough cash for gas.

I stayed at West Thumb/Grant Village Campground on the far SW end of Yellowstone Lake. It was a beautiful park & I, luckily, got a site right on the lake. There were no hook-ups but, they did have showers & bathrooms all around the park. There was a dump site with fresh water, as I recall, in the park. There is a store & restaurant in the park. The prices were quite reasonable as compared to the prices at the RV park just outside the south gate of the park. That park was nothing more than a hunk of dirt with a ten cent picnic table. However, it was next to an elegant hotel. Grants Village was outstanding compared to this dump!!!



Regarding "hard sided trailers", I had my 25' Nash aluminum sided trailer & had no troubles getting around the campground or park.

Stayed at the West Yellowstone KOA the last four times up there, only six miles from the West entrance. Pricing isn't bad. From there we did day trips into the park, Grand Tetons and surounding lakes. Have a safe trip, beautiful country around those parts.

Wouldn't the west entrance be a longer haul, than say something on the South end or East side of the park.

You can stay in ANY Walmart parking lot. They don't run RV;ers off!

I know what you are saying, but everyone sells China crap and they are an OK place to stop if it's a late night and all you have to do is sleep.

Anyone else want to chime in on a good place to camp in and around Yellowstone

I just got back from the Fishing Bridge Campground in Yellowstone on Saturday. It is a nice central site and you can access the rest of the park via the two road loops.

We stayed there eight nights and saw every site in Yellowstone with 6-7 hour day trips. Leave after breakfast and arrive back around 5-6 PM for dinner.



The campsite requires hard sided campers because of the bears around the area (Never saw one though). Also you have to pack up your stoves and grills after each use so the animals are not attracted to the sites.



The 350 or so sites there are full hookup. Be sure to get your reservation in because the site is full just about every day.
