Fleetguard Coolant

Well, since most of my coolant is going to be gone when I fix the damn return and t-stat housings tomorrow , I want to know what kind of coolant to get.



The reason I ask is that someone told me that I need to use the special fleetguard coolant because normal green stuff isn't rated for our engines.



I have used green coolant for a long time with no problems. Is it worth changing?

The blue stuff pn # CC2830 (gallon) is propylene glycol.

No, you don't.

The manual says to use any low silocate coolant and it doesn't have to be propylene.

This coolant has chemicals in it as compared to some that don't. It's intended for engines with liners.

Won't hurt to use it, just overkill.

Like Scott said, engines with liners have different needs.

Chrysler coolant specifications, for 1997 trucks, use only Ethylene-Glycol mixtures only. 50/50 mix or up to 68% antifreeze Max. Propylene-glycol formulations should not be used in Chrysler Vehicles they do not meet Chrysler specifications. So Prestone and the like are fine to use. ( Low Silicate are not needed )

Ethylene-Glycol mixtures only. No Propylene-glycol. Just read the back of the jug, look for Ethylene-Glycol. I'm sure fleetguard would be in specs. My next coolant change, I'm trying that Fleetguard 50/50 mix. I never get it right when I take the straight coolant and try to add water to it, to get the correct percentage. I even keep empty jugs around, fill with half h2o and half coolant. Get ya a antifreeze tester too, make sure your within specs, not too much antifreeze or not enough. Bill

So standard napa green coolant is ok? I just need to know quick because I'm refilling my cooling system this afternoon.

And oh yeah, to help clear this up maybe, Yes there are forms of 'green' coolant that are Ethylene-Glycol based. Bill

I checked my coolant, and it is the correct kind. While I was at the cummins outfit in town, I asked and the guy gave me an anti-electrolisis additive.

anti-electrolisis additive? What the heck is that? Sounds like another salesman saw a relative newby coming.

I am running the Havoline orange stuff, due to it being silicate FREE. I havent seen any real difference in using it versus the green, but I've only had this truck 11mo, so time will tell. Radiator stays cleaner longer- dont get the build up you do with the green stuff.

Yep. That silicate will clog things up fo' sure.

Back in Diesel School we were shown what it does inside the system. The stronger the antifreeze the higher the chance. I don't know of any diesel engine 'facurers who recommend "regular" coolant. Only low/no silicate.



And again,,,,our "B" model does not need the liner protection additive(s). But I suppose it wouldn't hurt anything. I use it in mine and all my buses use it, liner or not.

I've used the Fleetguard coolant, ES Complete, the blue stuff for years and have had no problem. I buy it premixed just because it is easy, no mixing. The back of the container says ethylene-glycol not propylene-glycol.



Even if DC said not to use the Fleetguard coolant, I would still run it any way, the warranty on this truck was over many years ago.
