Mark,

I sent an e-mail to Geno's to consider these additives based on your find. I know I would use the DFX-DPF formula.

Great find! More info: Fuels for Cummins Engine Service Bulletin 3379001-17 See pg 17, item 11.
Although other additives are available that can provide some

performance benefits, Cummins Filtration™ Platinum Plus™ DFX and Platinum Plus™

DFX-DPF Fuel Borne Catalyst are the only diesel fuel additives approved by Cummins

Inc. for use in reducing regeneration temperatures and/or reducing particulate matter.

May not be worth pursuing...

This stuff seems to cost around $400/gal, probably because of the platinum. :{

But who knows... . hopefully Geno's does!

YUP - amusing how Cummins denies the need or value of additives - until they start marketing their own - guess it all depends on which way the $$$ are flowing...:-laf

fuel additives

I was on the Cummins Filtration site and I noticed that they are now selling fuel additives. One of them is supposed to reduce soot and improve fuel mileage. Reducing the soot probably means fewer active regen cycles and better fuel mileage. Dodge still says it's not needed but now there's a product directly from Cummins. Here are the links below.

You are so right!!!!! Chrysler/Daimler & now Fiat are conspiring with Cummins to make sure that they pay for my warranty work, that they are making an effort to resolve issues, and with Eyores like yourself make sure that every know that the end of the world is not 21 December 2012, but the day 6. 7s were first installed in Dodge Ram HD trucks!

I haven't had to remove ANYTHING to enjoy my truck more than any other I have owned, nor have I had any issues getting anything fixed by Dodge.

My job involves wrenching on a 1960 model T-38 used EVERYDAY to train test pilots for the Air Force. The Air Force is not known for removing things from their aircraft; in fact they are always ADDING things. I have very FEW days where repairs take more than a day or 2. Normally all I do is check the oil, refuel & reset the seat belts. But according to you, all Northrop wanted to do was make sure as the manufacturer of the T-38 that it would spend all of its time being repaired at the depot. BS! All Northrop, Boeing, Dodge, Cummins, etc. have done is work to make their products more reliable & safe as best as they could within the rules they are working in.

I say get rid of your 2004. 5 Dodge. You aren't happy with Dodge, so emancipate yourself! Yeah, Dodge is out to get you!!!!

Mark

ps: I am sorry I had to YELL SO MUCH, but screaming down someone/something makes me a much bigger man & so much more able to deal with my issues by putting them on you.

In Cummins' defense, they have always maintained that fuel additives are not required, which is different from saying not recommended or ill-advised. It's in their best interest to tell people that additives are not required, since that reduces cost of owership.

However, Cummins has been selling asphaltene fuel conditioners for many years. I even have a couple bottles, but I've never tried it because I don't understand it.

Actually Cummins and Dodge according to our owner's manuals state that fuel additives are not required and, IIRC, not recommended for ISB6. 7 engines.

Cummins offers fuel additives for sale, perhaps for older or different versions of Cummins engines. Possible also for those who are dumb enough to insist on using them in ISB engines even when not needed.

Why not sell the product if some are determined to use it for the feel good effect.

Cummins dealer service personnel do recommend the special application additive for cleaning injectors when carbon build up or other issues are possible.

Soot has obviously been a problem with the new DPFs. I guess you could make
the argument that they are adapting the fuel to the engine instead of the other
way around. Buying an additive that is approved by the manufacturer offers
some reassurance anyway.

The fuel test kits look interesting if they don't cost an arm & leg.

Wow

Well thanks for reminding me why I got out the the AIR FARCE Im not downing Dodge or Cummins. I just said that I dont think Cummins is going to say to use Amalgamated fuel additive because its better than the crap we sell and if you use ours when your cp3 and injectors take a dive make sure that your Dodge dealer is the first one that you take it to. I wouldnt give the Dodge the chance to clean their finger prints off the door handle but thats another issue. As for making it so much better to work on jets they had to because the 43131C class of mechs are not as good as we once were. As the saying goes the older we get the better we were. It may be hot in the Mojve but try doing 19 mo. in a remote base in VIET NAM then we can talk about the word griping . The AIR FARCE said just do what we tell you. WORK ON THINGS THAT DIDNT EXZIST IN A PLACE THATS NOT ON A MAP AND WE WERNT THERE ANYWAY. Im also sorry for getting on the soap box and giving my two cents worth sorry for any type os and how many tech reps do you have at Edwards?

AIR FARCE...ain't that the truth!!!!

There are a few tech reps... . Boeing has one (a friend) for the T-38C. It seems the zipper suited sun gods are no longer able to self navigate nor figure out the EGTs without a digital gauge. As you know, Air Farce pilots do not make mistakes..... We lost a pilot because he loosened his seat straps to retrieve a lost object in the cockpit. He pushed the stick forward, flew up & hit the canopy, went unconscious & made it so the GIB couldn't fly them out. The Air Farce said a rudder component failed & caused the crash (that and documentation of training of the civilian mechs), but I can't see how the pushing of the stick forward caused the independent rudder system to fail! #@$%! FWIW, training comes last at Edwards... . PRODUCTION FIRST, LAST & ALWAYS!

BIGNASTY... let's agree to disagree about Dodge/Cummins/etc. But I give you my word that I do what is right at Edwards, not just what they tell me to do. They can all take a flying leap if they can't deal with the truth. I do, however, trust the Boeing tech rep as he has not lied to me.

Thanks for your service!

I enjoyed that line. I've met a few of them in years past and had a similar opinion although I was not clever enough to come up with that description.

When I was in Viet Nam I did what I thought was right for the crew on my planes. I was a crew chief for a squadron of misfits that didnt even wear uniforms because we were told not to. I worked on 01 s 02 s at a FAC base I was 19 scared out of my mind not that the NVA would get ahold of me but that I might do something that might get them killed. I knew and lived with them. Thats kind of the reason I got out after 4 is back in the world was no place for me in the Air Force. I think about the guys in the Middle East allot and wonder if they were told the same thing the Air Force is never on t v and we never hear about the job they do. I get kidded by guys at work about the Air Force but as you know we had the kind of planes that fly in combat and then you just pluged them in to the computer and they fixed them self. As for my Dodge and Cummins I love them both I just dont go to Dodge to have any work done. I take motor questions to Cal Pacific Cummins thankfully Ive had no problems except for the lift pump and I replaced it with Air Dog. Hope to hear from you again and happy con trails.

I thought they were "MULTI ZIPPER SUN GODS''

Multi Zipper Suited Sun Gods

I wish I had one of my old flight suits with all the zipper pockets so I could carry all the tools I would need if I ever had to work on one of my dodges.

To keep this Dodge/Cummins related this 03 is my third one and have loved all three of them. I do not take them to the dealer if they need work on the motor they go to Cummins shop.

Just loved the term Zipper Suited Sun Gods :-laf

We had a Boeing Rep fly with us on a refueling mission with our KC 135 and all he did was lay a sleep well I was refueling the B 52 Bomber. He did make the preflight walk around with the pilot.
