Went to Cummins Northeast today for filters, gave the parts guy p#LF16035 for the oil filter and he said it cross referenced to p#LF3894. Geno's catalog is showing that filter is good only up to '02. Didn't realize it 'til I got home.

Anyone know if that's correct???

Matt

It will work just fine but it doesn't have the hex shaped bottom so it will be harder to removed some day. IE; you'll have to use a strap instead of a filter socket.

Technically Cummins says you can't go back with the oil filters. LF3894 is the old 24V Stratapore oil filter. LF16035 is the updated filter for your truck. Yes the old filter will 'work'. It will screw on, but Cummins updated them for 'some' reason. The old trucks, such as my 89 can use any filter 89-06, but Cummins doesn't recommend using an old filter with new models. Why? Don't know.

So why is it that if you buy Mopar oil filters they list them for '89-'06? (https://www.dodgeparts.com/product_info.php/products_id/1280?osCsid=e0105e24fbcd68cd037650556d8e4b03)

I ask because I was going to split a case of them (Fleetguards, not Mopars) with a buddy that has a 2000 model. I saw on Geno's site that they were different but didn't know why.

I'm sure Mopar isn't using a filter that was researched and developed years ago for their 06 models. I bet they are using the filter batch from 03 and up models. But like I said 89's and up can use any filter. Supposively they update/upgrade each new model filter. But last I checked all Cummins 5. 9's operate at the same oil pressure etc. Use what ya want.

The LF16035 is identical in all respects to the LF3894 except for the fluted shell for easier removal on the 03' and up models. I used up my stock of 3894's on my 04. 5, then went with the 16035's.

Here is the comment from the product detail page fot the 16035 on the fleetguard website:

"Product Comment

Stratapore version of LF3972. This filter is similar to LF3894 except it has a fluted shell for 03MY Dodge Ram application. "
