"Fleetwood announces more plant closings

PENDLETON, Ore. -- Employees of Fleetwood Travel Trailers of Oregon got the tough news this morning from management that their plant's doors will close for good. Corporate management also announced the closure of the company's manufacturing plant in La Grande.

The closures affects 253 employees in Pendleton and 162 in La Grande, according to a letter to the cities from Evelyn Guiter, director of human resources for Fleetwood Enterprises, which owns the Oregon manufacturing facilities.

"We will cease production of travel trailers and begin closing your manufacture or service facility," Guiter said in the letter. "This process is expected to take 30-45 days, and we expected this closure to be permanent. "

Without the travel trailer division, Fleetwood will focus on its motor homes and manufactured housing division, also facing challenges. Company officials have indicated they are not interested in relocating the production of motor homes or manufactured homes to the Pendleton or La Grande sites.

Kathy Munson, Fleetwood corporate spokeswoman, said the move to get out of the travel trailer business is effective immediately. "I wish I could say this isn't happening, but it is," Munson said. "It's been an extremely tough economy for RVs. ... We depend a lot on consumer confidence and there hasn't been any. "

Robert Thompson, owner of Thompson RV in Pendleton, said a Fleetwood sales manger met him this morning to give him the news. Thompson said his dealership still has Fleetwood inventory, and Fleetwood has a reserve fund to handle warranties for a year.

Thompson said local travel trailer and RV sales have been good, which is bucking the declining nationwide trend. But he said it's too early to tell how Fleetwood's closures will affect his business, though he speculated he may have to bring in new products from other manufactures.

In another article on the same blog Fleetwood announced that it is leaving the travel trailer market but will continue manufacturing motorhomes.

Supply and demand ,some, also how is the price of the camp grounds factor in on the closing of these factorys and others note the out of work in north inda. cost of fuel ,I think some will be driven back to the tent and closer to home. Just a thought . Ron Bissett

Based on the mediocre build quality of my 2003 Fleetwood built trailer it's probably a good thing. Not impressed with how its held up in the 6 years I've owned it (and 4 of those years was in indoor storage). I was expecting more for $22K.

Airstream is still around. You pay through the nose for them, but you get what you pay for. My next TT will most likely be an Airstream product because I don't like having to replace RVs every 6-7 years.

Although I hate to see any RV Manufacture go out of business because of loss jobs, Fleetwood will not be missed because they have never been know for quality.

Actually, the low end rv's like Fleetwood will be missed. Many people buying their first rv end up buying a low end unit. It will be intersting to see which mfg. goes after this part of the market. My first new 5er(of three)back in 1992 was a Fleetwood product, and it was the most trouble free of all of them.

I've got a Wilderness/Fleetwood 5th wheel, been a great RV, no problems. I just acquired an 89 Avion TT/Fleetwood, it is in outstanding shape for it's age. I think as an RV and TT manufacturer, they WILL be missed by many. It is a shame that this industry is being hit so hard by today's economic problems. Maybe someone out there with big $$$'s will buy out their share of the segment?
