47re trans question

trying out the new hitch

with a 13,000 GVWR and a cargo capacity of 5760lbs would it be safe to assume i could put my 3200lbs ford escort into the cargo area in a safe way?

i see the door is rated for 2500lbs, but im sure i could brace it for loading and unloading... .

any input on this or other fleetwood travel trailers? i am looking at buying something to live in for a few months at a time. will a lower end fleetwood like this hold up?

its not required that i be able to put the escort inside, but it would be cool if i could.

a couple things you should be advised of

1. that is dry your approximate weight rating.

2. that is also not taking into account the options you selected.

3. there should be a tag in the cabinets or on the back wall near the lift gate that specifies the actual cargo capacity after factory installed options.

4. the tag you find is still not taking into account dealer installed options. generator for example if the dealer installed the gen set the tag wont reflect that weight.

5. what the consumer loads in the means of clothing, supplies, water, fuel etc etc needs to be subtracted from that rating for example your fresh water capacity is 120 gallons, that about 980lbs right there. I would rekon you'll be left with about 3000lbs of actual cargo capacity once its all said and done.

most anything you buy would hold up better if you double towed than having something that heavy hanging off the back wheels for countless miles.

i have accounted for the dry weight of the trailer. i have not bought a trailer yet, but was just considdering options. its not a huge deal if i cant fit the ford in the back, as i would be looking at two trips for two trailers either way... .

thanks for the input though...

never buy anything with fleetwoods name on it just got rid of my fifth wheel ill never buy another fleetwood product

If you are looking to put a car in, you might consider a Weekend Warrior. They are more expensive, but are built to hold a car (we drove a 4x4 jeep into a 32 the other day, right up the ramp) and they have a life-time structural warranty. They are also triple axle (the fifth wheels) and therefore can carry significant loads without leaving you with a 2,500 pound or more pin weight, which is tough on your truck...

I walked through a Gear Box when they first came out, it only took a few minutes to stop considering it. The fit and finish inside was horrible, looked like something a pre-school class put together. The cabinets were mdf with the staples holding them together backing out through the veneer. This was on a unit that the dealer brought to an RV show.

Yeah, stay away from Fleetwood!! Crap! Fleetwood is to RV as Yugo is to cars! ... very cheaply made.

I second the weekend warrior or Taho transport trailers... .

A lot of trailers don't have much carr. cap... . my 36' Raptor by Keystone is a tripple axle and in the cargo area, (12' x 8') it says on a sticker not to excede 2000#... this is a separate walled garage area and the all inclusive types are more but I have never seen any more than like 3500# or so. .

thanks for the input. ill mark them down on my list of things to keep an eye out for.

i looked online at the weekend warrior... nice trailers. im going to have to start finding prices online now as well. cost is always a factor, but paying more and getting more is always great.

I have a friend that is about to order a weekend warrior and he said the best prices by a long shot are Giant RV down near you. He is planning on coming from Reno to pick it up, I guess Giant has a dealer right next to the WW factory. I don't know how much you are looking to spend but we love our Holiday Rambler Next Level. Great quality rig and I know people put 2500 lb sandrails in them and the WW without a problem.

No argument that fleetwood's products tend to be slapped together. However I am on my second and have racked up many, many, many trouble free vacations with no problems at all.

My 99 toybox has been used every other weekend during the winter months, and five weeks on the road every summer traveling the western U. S and Canada with close to 40K miles on the BEAST.

I just this spring replaced all the springs, bearings, and brakes , After 40K of service seems reasonable, not to mention they are inexpensive.

Mac

IMO most of the toy haulers are crap and the manufacturers grossly overrate them - including WW. I own a Patio Hauler and it's the best of the crap IMO - and it's not well built.

I would not recommend a toy hauler for 3-4 month stints - the floor plan on most toy haulers isn't laid out for living it's a hauling & sleeping floor plan. The exceptions would be trailers with a separate garage like my Patio Hauler, Eric's Keystone or some of the WW trailers. My Patio Hauler has a living room/dinette slide out and it's worth every penny and pound.
