Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) floating gears

just out of curiosity sakes-

i'm a wrecker driver and i float all my gears in my work truck.

float-shift w/o using clutch

is it safe to do that in my ctd (6spd)?? any harm done??

id fig it would save the clutch and throwout bearing!

If done properly EVERY TIME there is no reason it should hurt anything. With that being said. It may help save the clutch and throw out bearing, but with the cost (and difficult availability) of an nv5600 I wouldn't do it. I would much rather replace a clutch than a trans. Drive it like normal, and the clutch will be just fine until you add too much HP.

Usually when I have a trailer hooked on, I float the gears. For some reason to me it's just easier with that load on. Sometimes I do it when not hooked up. Like rubberneck said, if you do it properly, you won't hurt anything.

If you do it on any transmission that is synchronized,you are putting the synchros to the test and they will not last too long. As stated above the 5600 is not a good transmission to do it with as the synchros can be problematic at times in these. If you do it and actually can get away with it, When someone else wants to drive it and the synchros are burned,up floating will be the only way you will ever get it in gear.
