The Great Houston Flood of 2001 had me stranded in a parking lot Friday night :( after driving through a lot of water. Managed to keep the engine dry (I think). I'm going to change the gear oil front and back. What type of oil do you guys usually use? I hear a lot of talk about amsoil... The truck only has about 7000 miles on it, if that makes any difference as far as break in on the diff's.

Also, while parting the waters of south Houston, my volt meter went to zero. When I turned the engine off and started it again, everything was fine, and I assume no damage was done. Has anybody else experienced this?

Thanks for any comments or suggestions!

I wouldn't use Amsoil in the engine quite yet. I would change the oil though. And probably again after a few miles. When you do change the oil, check for water. It will be obvious if it comes out. As far as the diffs are concerned, You could change to amsoil and get away with it. I would check the water content also when you change the diffs' oil out.

As far as the electronics, if it restarted and the meter read normal, then I wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't know if the Dodge has a self-resetting breaker for the charging system. If it did you probably just tripped it from a short circuit. Sorry to hear about that flooding. Hope you make it out okay.

Change all fluids. transmission, axles, engine, transfer case. Also filters and repact wheel bearings. If not, you WILL have premature failures. You might think about if any water got into you tank, via your vent tube.

Of couse all this depends on how deep your truck went, and how long it held its breath. Good Luck. I saw first hand the amount of flooding around Houston. Not a pretty sight.
