I finaly took off my 3" 3 chamber flowmaster today and put an 18" glasspack on the truck. I swore to myself i would never put a pack on anything I owned ever. . oh well lol.

Empty the truck sounds MUCH better, mainly because it is somewhat loud now. EGT and boost are the same as before.

Now towing... WOW pulled about 8K worth of racecar, beer, and people out to the track tonight. HUGE difference in towing power. Has a cool dumptruck sound to it :). Kind of hard to explain but the truck just plain runs better towing then it did before. EGT climbs noticably slower but peaks at the same 1200* as it did before.

Not knocking flowmaster at all but this particular one did not suite my application well.

Well thats basically what I did except I took off the stock muffler and resonator and put on a Vortex by Cherry Bomb (straight through glass pack 3") and love the sound!! Not any faster but spools up quicker and the sound is awesome... ... ... ... ... Pete

Bad340fish,

Your experimentation proves that chambered mufflers are not a good thing for a turbo diesel motor.

I happy you found some new power in the truck.

Cooker is right. There was a long thread about this, probably close to 2 years ago now, but there were others who've tried Flowmasters with poor results. I think Flowmaster is a misnomer when it comes to sticking one on a turbodiesel. . . flows?--NOT! Especially a 3" one where the large volume of air has to fight its way through the chambers

Clark-

I had pulled my flatbed, all steel, trailer with tractor on it prior to going to a straight 3". After the change, I could tell some difference in pulling power and turbo spool-up. Just bought a 30' 5er that weighs about 9K empty and am anxious to see how it handles that. Glad you experienced the same thing with the glass pack. Now I know I wasn't just imagining the difference. :D

First of all by no means did I have the best flowmaster for the application, it was BIG!! It was something I had around so I used it on my truck.

Dave, now all you need to do is get an EZ box on that truck ;)

Floor It, I am sure a Borla would work great but it would leave your wallet walking funny for awhile lol

Better change that sig. Badfish. Now you all got me wondering about mine but I really like it so far, and it sounds good. But it was a much different one than bad's... I have been kicking around the idea of straight piping.

Dang 5" straight pipe that must have a nice tone. lol

Sky, its worth a shot IMO. You might be out a few $$ but you might find something you really like... or really hate lol. I will have to agree that your Flowmaster was a much better choice than mine. I notice my black smoke comes out further now also lol of course the temps being in the 100s doesn't hurt the smoke situation any :) let us know what you do

EZ?

Bad340Fish (Clark)-

Yea, I've thought a lot about an EZ, but think I want to wait until I pull the new (new to me) 5er and see how the HO performs stock. That way I'll have something to compare it to when I do start the bombing.

Can't wait to see what the ole straight pipe sounds like pulling some grades in Colorado. May head up there Thurs. of next week if sister from Texas can swing the time off.

Need to install guages and exhaust brake, but the $'s tend to give one an agenda and I'm not able yet.

Dave, I would let you try out my EZ if my truck were a 2001, but the 99 map sensor connection is not the same as the newer trucks. I doubt you will have any problems towing that 5'er stock. I got my EZ more for my lead foot then the actual need for more power. I tow a trailer for one of my racing buddies most of the time and the EZ did make a big difference but the truck pulled it fine stock. Now I am wantting to do Injectors... . they do not lie about the BOMB bug lol

Not just the MAP sensor is different but the "programming" is different as well as the Data Plug connection. The EZ's are 98. 5 to 00 and then 2001.

IMO it does... kind of hard to put a muffler in the system and not make it at least a little quiter IMO.

Update,

I seem to have lost some boost. . down to 22 measly PSI from my 26(yeah I know its weak). I think its due to it bieng 102* on the trucks thermo all this week. I didn't even pay attention before hardly. I have been watching things more since I changed the muffler. The runs just as good. . considering its 100* outside. It sounds so much better though. I have driven it everyday this week since i got stuck with JURY DUTY all week. I normaly drive my work truck all the time and the ram only moves on the evenings and weekends
