I called Flowmaster about a year ago concerning a recommendation for the 6BTA Cummins in our trucks. At that time I was told that they had no muffler that would flow the volume of exhaust that the Cummins produced. They flat out told me not to use one of their mufflers.

The 6BTA Cummins flows from around 1300 to over 1500 CFM of exhaust depending on power level. A modified engine would exceed these numbers. There a quite a few mid size truck mufflers that will handle this flow. Most heavy duty muffler catalogs have charts that will give the specifications regarding flow at given back pressure.
I have selected a 4" straight thru muffler from the Donaldson catalog for my truck. I don't have the info at hand right now but it is a muffler used on several mid range trucks.
Some of the TDR advertisers offer mufflers in the 4" size and they would be able to offer you one that works. But after what I was told by Flowmaster I would not install one of theirs on my truck.

Hope this helps!

92 D250 Auto Trans-Currently stock except for TCI special torque convertor. Now adding 16cm turbo housing, complete 4" exhaust, tachometer, pyrometer, and transmission temperature gauge. Injectors in the near future.
Also have 1984 Volvo D260 with inline 6 diesel made by Volkswagen.

Just got off the phone with R&E Racing of Lancaster CA. I'm having a US Gear overdrive installed there. They recommend I install a cat-back 4 inch system using a flowmaster muffler. They'll charge 350. 00 with flanges installed so vehicle owners can remove the cat and install a straight pipe.
My engine is still a blank canvas except for a K&N filter. Should I go with their recommendations?
Thanks in advance. The power of the TDR is the ONLY thing that can match our engines!

Thanks very much. Your one reply is exactly what I'd hoped for. This only confirms my TDR membership and proves it's power and information IS POWER!

Do a search "walker muffler" . . lots of info... I got the 4" straight through walker, sounds and preforms very well, nice turbo whisle and yet not the barky sound of a stright pipe #ad

Ian:

Walker makes a muffler for the Dodge
trucks which is supposed to work very
well. I believe the number on it is
#21471. It has a 4" inlet and 4" outlet.
Joe Donnelly has one on his truck and
says he likes it. I will soon have the
4" system on my truck too.

Another alterative is a Banks free flowing muffler. They may cost more but are stainless steel with a lifetime warranty. Another advantage is that they are in Azusa, on the way to Lancaster.

My . 02 cents,
Check out Walkers 54 150 4" tailpipe, just like stock but 4". Reasonable too. Less than $80 for the pipe. I'm running 3" to get past my x-member then through Dodge's 3" in, 4" out resonator off the 98s, through the Walker tailpipe. Normal conversation is still possible and zero backpressure. Hope this gives you another possibility to consider.

Thanks again to all-
That's the other possibily. Banks is close and convenient. I'm active duty military and live in a condominium. At least I have a garden hose to wash my truck! It's the simple things I miss... What ever I do somebody's going to have to do it! I have no garage or the tools (my dirt bikes are living room conversation pieces!).
I've decided for R&E Racing to do the transmission and a two gauge auto-meter pillar mount set up. I'll hold off on exhaust till later and save the budget. I'll be driving to Elizabeth City, NC for my knew job in July. I think the 'ol truck with the gear splitter will do fine. I'm 21K down the road. Heavy but I cruise at a moderate 62-63mph. Maybe a Banks stinger kit (save the clutch!) in the distant future...
