Changed auto trans fluid & filter yesterday. Prior to this truck was operating correctly. Made no other changes or adjustments. Drained 6qt. and refilled with Amsoil Universal, but not the +4 designation. After a few miles, trans is slipping. I have used Amsoil products for many years, and will continue. If there is a problem, it's likely my own fault for using incorrect fluid. Question now is whether to flush and fill with Amsoil +4, or Mopar +4, or do I have bigger problems that have just now become evident?

Thanks

Same thing happened to me. I changed fluid and filter with proper ATF+3 (96 truck) and next day couldn't get up hill from river without taching 2500.

Went straight to trans shop. Trans shop said the new fluid was much slicker than old fluid and, even though only about 3 quarts are changed under normal circumstances, that is enough to start clutch packs slipping.

Upon pulling the trans it was determined that the TC had broken up inside. There was too much shrapnel and nothing showing major destruction inside the trans so it had to be TC.

Hope you don't have same thing I found. If I had known then what I know now I would have saved that $1300 and gone to an aftermarket built trans and been done with it. Now I have an upgrade path with what I have that will end up costing anyway.

Good luck.

update

This may not be fluid related after all??

Drained, adjusted bands, refilled with correct +3 fluid. got 10. 5 qt this time.

Have no OD, 1st gear only if manually shifted there directly from reverse or neutral, and no lockup. Check engine light is on. Beginning to sound electrical.

Latest News

Went in to dealer today, the plot thickens. My "check engine" light is not related to the trans. problem. Code is set for malfunctioning crank position sensor. Funny how that happened same time as transmission solenoids lunched. ?. ? It seems to be correct, as my tach is off & on now. Problem in transmission has been diagnosed as faulty lockup/OD solenoids. (3/4) I'm still wondering why these things happened immediately after a transmission service, when I did nothing wrong with respect to procedure.

Still Wondering-Get new solenoids tomorrow-will do follow-up

Yes, it's possible. The problem is that I did not touch anything. At this point, I almost wish I had, so I could know the root cause of this problem. My first thought is that it had to be related to fluid change somehow. Maybe it still is. I don't know. The solenoids in question are located inside the pan, attatched to the valve body. The current diagnosis is that they have failed. I would like to know why. I'd hate to replace them, and have the new ones go bad. I don't know if there is a problem condition in the lockup assy. that could cause this. The wiring connectors and harness appear undamaged, and in the same condition and location as they were when pan was first removed.

The staff @ DTT has been helpful, and they can expect to hear from me again today.

All is OK now

Back to normal.

Replaced crank position sensor per engine trouble code.

Replaced 3/4 solenoids(lockup & OD, in trans).

Thanks to all who replied here with posts and e-mails.

Thanks to DTT for the courtesy & asistance. This is an un-modified truck, and I am not a DTT customer, (YET). I do suspect that this truck will have DTT parts in the future.

Thanks to all my NWBombers friends who helped me.

Thanks to my buddy Joe, who will own this truck soon, I think???

This was NOT an Amsoil problem, and the truck has Amsoil Universal ATF +4 in it right now.

I still don't understand why both of these items lunched at or near the same time, and would like to know the answer, but it eludes me at this time.

Thanks again, Eric
