Well before I decided to drive to Florida for vacation I decided to change the fluid & adjust the bands on my 04. 5... . 48re truck(78k Miles). So I did, I set the kick down band to about 3/16" of a gap & the low reverse band gap to about 5/16"... ... . That the distance between the little arm & the piston it operates... Well then I go to drive it & it feels like its searching for I think 2nd gear real light throttle... almost pulsating... I drove it like that for a few days & checked the fluid & it seemed dark so I changed the fluid again & now the clearance between the piston & arm is now about 1/2"... so I reset it & now drove 18hrs to Florida. . It still hunts for 1-2 shift under part... real light throttle But 2-3 & OD seem fine.

My temp fix is shift 1-2 manually

A buddy said adjust the kickdown linkage because it needs more line pressure...

Any transmission gurus have any suggestions????

THIS DARN THING WORKED FINE BEFORE I ADJUSTED THE BANDS!!!!!!!!!

I Only changed the gap from what it was by about maybe 2 turns of the adjusting screws on both!!!!!!!

Thanks

If this thing is like a 47re you need a torque wrench and back off so many turns and torque to a specific torque. this is in inch pounds. Never known to adjust an auto by measuring distance.

What he said.

146,000 miles on my truck and only fluid/filter changes. Never touched the bands and never will unless there is an issue directly related to the bands.

From another website:

ADJUSTMENT - BANDS

FRONT BAND

The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw is

located on the left side of the transmission case

above the manual valve and throttle valve levers.

(1) Raise vehicle.

(2) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut (Fig. 74).

Then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting

screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw

threads if necessary.

(3) Tighten band adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in.

lbs. ) torque with Inch Pound Torque Wrench

C-3380-A, a 3-in. extension and an appropriate

Torx™ socket.

CAUTION: If Adapter C-3705 is needed to reach the

adjusting screw, tighten the screw to only 5 N·m

(47-50 in. lbs. ) torque.

(4) Back off front band adjusting screw 1-3/4 turns.

(5) Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten

locknut to 41 N·m (30 ft. lbs. ) torque.

(6) Lower vehicle.

The Rear Band is inside:

REAR BAND

The transmission oil pan must be removed for

access to the rear band adjusting screw.

(1) Raise vehicle.

(2) Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid.

(3) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns.

Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever.

(4) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs. )

torque (Fig. 75).

(5) Back off adjusting screw 3 turns.

(6) Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut

to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs. ) torque.

(7) Position new gasket on oil pan and install pan

on transmission. Tighten pan bolts to 17 N·m (13 ft.

lbs. ) torque.

(8) Lower vehicle and refill transmission with

Mopart ATF +4, Automatic Transmission fluid.

OK, the first question I ask is what did you do to break it? So it seems you did the adjustment all wrong. Not sure where you got the adjustment procedure you used, but the proper adjustment is generally three turns or less backed off from the torque spec on any Mopar transmission. So if you changed the adjustment "only two turns from where it was" you are way off. Follow the procedure posted above and hope the band(s) and drum(s) are not ruined.

And note the torque is in inch pounds, not foot pounds so you don't shear off the band strut.

Better yet, why not just take it in and have it done correctly.
